rebirth | almaty fashion week

Posted by & filed under fashion.

The word ‘fashion’ encompasses more than just a common understanding of mode or style. Whilst individual pieces may be striking, challenging, unnerving or daring, at its core, the force of fashion is a uniting one — bridging stories all over the world, displaying different sides of the universe and presenting the beauty of each region’s fashion language.  However, the splendour of the fashion world moves concurrently to, and in conversation with, the troubles of our own. After we attended the Visa Fashion Week in the Kazakhstan city of Almaty, the city became engulfed in turmoil, facing a political crisis that put the city through riots and brutality that took the lives of many. Almaty has not yet settled. But whilst there, it became clear that there is a creativity within the Kazakh people that will ensure their prolonged success, encouraging them to stay brave and cheer each other on in the spirit of brotherhood during such a dark time. Only few weeks ago, Almaty once more revealed to the world its bold and flowing creativity. During the 3rd and 4th of December, this beautiful and culturally kaleidoscopic city in Central Asia hosted a major celebration of fashion. When thinking of… Read more »

interview | olly

“Watching people’s minds become inquisitive, watching people react and respond to me when I walk into a room or on set, watching people navigate me, being a political statement before I even open my mouth. I love taking up space in a way that has nothing to do with me.” Olly Eley is a star like none other. In Schön’s interview with Olly, they talk about taking comfort in reaching out to their community over social media, how we can make the world safer for trans people, and being free by living completely by their own rules. Take notes — you just might just learn something. “I remember the day I discovered that I could connect with other Queer/Trans people across the globe in such a simple and visual way.” I’m quoting you from your Instagram because I find this to be really interesting. How do you think social media plays a part in your connection with others, and what do you think about this visual connection?  Social media has played a huge part in keeping me alive! I know that sounds dramatic [laughs]. However, it has played such a huge role in keeping me connected with my community, mainly… Read more »

plugged in | calvin klein + wax poetics

Calvin Klein is celebrating young creators once again, this time teaming up with music journal Wax Poetics to put a spotlight on a new generation of music journalists. Highlighting the work of up-and-coming writers, Plugged In gives these talents a platform to explore music history in deep and interesting ways. Over 100 people applied for this program, and of those four were selected, given educational resources, expert mentorship and payment to create a long-format feature about their favourite music topic. The four people selected are Maeve Hannigan, who used her platform to explore Glasgow’s Emerging Jazz Scene; Vuyokazi Mtukele, a Southern African journalist, poet and cultural critic who created an expansive piece covering Mariam Makeba’s Exile Years; Violeta Arango, a researcher, photographer, visual artist and writer who discusses the Latin Influences of London’s music scene; and finally, Amelia Fearon, who took the time to reflect on Manchester’s Post-Punk Scene. Each story can be read today on Calvin Klein’s site. Read all the stories and see the films on Calvin Klein’s site now.   Schön! fantastisch | five years of hamburg elbphilharmonie

Posted by & filed under culture, video.

On Tuesday 11 January, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg celebrated its fifth anniversary with a gala concert devoted exclusively to music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The performance, held in the Grand Hall, was merely one part of a several-day long celebration of the anniversary, beginning with the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg performance under its principal conductor Kent Nagano on Sunday 9 January. “I couldn’t be more delighted that the concerts marking our fifth anniversary can take place before a full house, with only a few compromises: it was touch-and-go for quite a while!” said Christoph Lieben-Seutter, General & Artistic Director of the Elbphilharmonie and the Laeiszhalle. The concert was performed under Germany’s 2G+ regime, requiring all attendees to be both vaccinated and boosted or to be vaccinated while presenting a negative COVID test. As Lieben-Seutter later noted, this event provided the entire Elbphilharmonie time some time to reflect on the work they’ve done to date. “[It] offers me and my team the chance to look back on the exciting years since we opened, and to celebrate in the company of many companions, friends and supporters the fact that the Elbphilharmonie has met and even exceeded the high expectations placed in… Read more »

interview | ser’darius blain

Fox’s acclaimed new drama series The Big Leap follows the paths that brought a group of diverse people to participate to a dance-show competition, looking for second chances in life while realising their dreams. One of the stars of this relatable and riveting drama is Ser’Darius Blain, a multitalented actor who says he has much in common with his character Reggie Sadler. In our exclusive interview, Blain also shares his bond with American football — which brought us to discuss his latest role in American Underdog, a film that follows the life of NFL player Kurt Warner. We read your mother was a drama teacher. Would you say this paved the way for you to pursue this career as an actor? Yes, my mother was a drama teacher at my middle school but, before that, she introduced me to the arts by constantly playing music and movies in our house. She was also a performer in the late 70s and early 80s so I knew that she provided a safe space for me to explore that side of myself, and I honestly can’t thank her enough. How did you feel when you found out you were going to be one of… Read more »

Propelled to stardom after her role in Veneno, Daniela Santiago — featured on our exclusive digital cover wearing Samurai San and Studio4 — moves to the big screen in Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers. Calling from her hometown of Malaga, Spain, where she has been spending the summer, Daniela Santiago seems to be in her most joyous moment. It is only a few days before the presentation at the Venice Film Festival of the newest Almodóvar movie Parallel Mothers, where she appears alongside Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón. “To be able to work with the great Pedro Almodóvar, a film director I’ve admired since I can remember, has been a huge gift,” she enthuses. “I’m extremely happy!” The film tells the story of two expectant single mothers who have fallen pregnant by accident. They meet in a hospital room as they are about to give birth and, from that moment on, their lives unfold in unpredictable ways. Santiago cannot be pressed for more detail. “Pedro would kill me if I spoiled it. I have it more than prohibited. I cannot comment on absolutely anything,” she laughs. “I have a single sequence with Penélope, which is pretty good for my… Read more »

interview | ethan cutkosky

Posted by & filed under culture, video.

Curiosity is something all creatives need in order to thrive — thankfully, Ethan Cutkosky has this in abundance. Whether it’s on set, in the studio or at the skatepark, Cutkosky is driven by a hunger to experiment and learn. Since establishing his acting career as one of the Gallagher kids on Shameless, Cutkosky has found the ability to express himself through music, fashion as well as filmmaking. Schön! speaks to the young star about his childhood, his aspirations and more.  Hello Ethan! Let’s start by going back to Shameless. How did you find saying goodbye when the show wrapped? COVID was really a deterrent from being able to understand and look at how long we’ve worked together for, which sucked, but was also good in its own way. We were just so happy to be able to make it through the season without getting shut down. It was at a time before most people were vaccinated so our production had to be extra cautious, and productions were scarce, so we were just grateful to be able to have made it through in this hard time. Now that it’s months after the show, I’ve been able to look back at… Read more »

interview | paris berelc

Posted by & filed under culture.

Paris Berelc is ready to make moves — big moves. After a fan- and critic-beloved starring role on Netflix’s Alexa & Katie as the titular Alexa, she had a featuring role on Netflix’s The Crew before landing her next big project: 1UP, a film co-starring Ruby Rose that Berelc describes as “so funny” and “a great movie about women getting the job done.” After all, as Berelc reminds us, “Who doesn’t want to watch a movie about hot gamer girls?” Schön! joins the actor for an exclusive conversation. As a Milwaukee native, I have to ask: Kopp’s or Culver’s? What’s your go-to order? That’s like asking me who’s my favourite sister! I can’t choose between the two. I will say I get Culver’s more often than Kopp’s. My go-to order at Culver’s is a chocolate Heath Concrete Mixer and the spicy chicken. At Kopp’s, I love burgers with the works and a banana split. You began acting at 14. What do you think starting so young teaches you about the industry? The biggest thing I’ve learned is that I don’t have everything figured out. Starting at such a young age, everybody treats you like an adult and you can tend to forget there’s so… Read more »

Schön! 41 digital cover | matthias schweighöfer

Posted by & filed under beauty, culture, fashion.

Matthias Schweighöfer, pictured wearing Prada and Fossil, is one of the most celebrated actors and directors in Germany – and Hollywood studios have taken note. Schön! discovers an exceptional talent who is always up for a new challenge. A remarkable charisma, a positive charm and captivating blue eyes: one could reduce Matthias Schweighöfer to these attributes, but that would not come close to summarising such a fascinating man. Schweighöfer grew up on the 8th floor of a block of flats in Chemnitz, a three-hours’ drive from Berlin, in what was then East Germany. As both his parents were actors, Schweighöfer tread the boards from an early age. “I remember clearly how it felt to play in front of an audience of less than 500 people,” he recalls. “Those are beautiful childhood memories.” A lot has happened in Schweighöfer’s life since then. Today, most Germans could name at least five romantic comedies or dramas that he produced and directed or in which he played the leading role. His list of awards is impressive, and his films regularly reach blockbuster level, but instead of simply enjoying his success in Germany, he has never stopped improving his talent. In addition to his career… Read more »

Brune-Franklin steps into the multi-layered plot as Luci, a complex character and captivating character. Schön! speaks with Brune-Franklin about her career, personal life and of course, The Tourist. Back in your school days, you were a star athlete. Did you ever consider a career in sports prior to your decision to become an actor? How do you think athletic training has influenced your work today?  I loved sport growing up. I always wanted to play a sport professionally. As a kid I thought that would be the ideal job, because doing something I loved so much for a living seemed like the best possible outcome. So, in a way, I still feel like I got to do something I love; acting was just a passion I found much later on. After a successful stint modelling in Paris during her teens, German-born actor Diane Kruger was catapulted to global fame as Helen – AKA ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ – in the 2004 epic Troy. Since then, she’s certainly proved to be more than just a pretty face, whether that’s as a double agent in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds or the victim of terrorism in In the Fade, for which she won Best Actress at Cannes. Kruger talks with Schön! about her upcoming projects, which provide further evidence of her versatility, and range from dark comedy Swimming with Sharks to kick-ass, all-female action thriller The 355, starring Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o and Fan Bingbing. You’ve mentioned in the past that you wanted to work with more female co-stars. Your wish certainly came true with The 355! Yes, I love those women and I’ve always wanted to work with them. It felt great to be included in that group. Most of us have children and were able to bring them to work, so it was a very joyous set. interview | raúl castillo

It has been an eventful year for Raúl Castillo. From a former combat veteran in Wrath of Man to a vampire hunter in Night Teeth, his versatility gives life to any character, carrying the story along with charm and exceptional skill. His latest role, Arthur in the fantasy thriller Mother/Android, finds him in a war between humans and sentient robots. “Arthur is a scientist and survivalist who desperately wants to help the young, soon-to-be mother at the centre of the story,” he shares with Schön! On the heels of such a busy year, it would be natural to assume that his previous roles affected this latest endeavour. Not necessarily so, he details. “In some ways, nothing could have prepared me for Mother/Android,” Castillo starts, “and in other ways, they all prepared me for it.” Mostly, the actor credits both his time as a live actor onstage and writer Mattson Tomlin in developing the role. Tomlin, Castillo details, gave him “so much to work with, and so much room to explore and be creative”. The result is a project that, despite its sci-fi setting, has a wholly human and relatable core. “[It’s] a deeply moving story and a very personal story… Read more »

By playing with taboos and audience expectations, cult film director Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta has become one of the most lusted after and talked about films of the year — an elusive film comprised of hallucinations of Jesus, Virgin Mary statues turned sex toys and torture. Starring across from Virginie Efira, Daphne Patakia portrays Benedetta’s love interest, the naive and compulsive lesbian nun Bartolomea. The Greek actress speaks to Schön! about on set dynamics, the importance of complex female characters and the new year.  Hello Daphne! How was your year? Great, because we shot Benedetta three years ago and finally 2021 was the year it came out. It was supposed to screen at Cannes in 2019, but Paul Verhoeven had some health issues, so it was postponed. The producer said we’re going to wait for 2020, then they called me to say the film has been taken by Cannes and we were all celebrating, then COVID happened. Then they decided to wait for the next year. How was Cannes? I’ve been before, but this was the first time I was in competition. It was great. I remember the red carpet, everybody was shouting, and I was terrified. I looked at Paul… Read more »

What do we do when no one sees us? Do we allow ourselves to satisfy our darkest and most unspeakable desires? What if someone turns on the light and catches us? We all have a strictly private and intimate dark side, so there’s no shame in that. The voyeur who is scandalized is the one who should be ashamed of invading someone else’s private area. Why is he scandalized? Doesn’t he satisfy his darkest desires? That should be the shame: not allowing himself to give free rein to his innermost self. interview | mustafa shakir

Posted by & filed under culture.

Cowboy Bebop has skyrocketed into the constellations on a futuristic space shuttle, fearlessly commanded by the iconic and heartwarmingly idiosyncratic Jet Black. Jet, portrayed by Mustafa Shakir, is a gravelly-voiced jazz aficionado who is as precious about his intergalactic shuttle as he is protective of his daughter and ex-wife. Whilst his female-dominated family addition is new to the reboot, it adds cushiony layers to the brawny bravado that previously distinguished the character; imagine the ex-cop assassin ruffing up robbers and bulldozing a casino, only to turn on his heels and fret about finding a specific doll that his daughter currently covets.  Not only does Mustafa relate to the many facets of this role — like Jet, he too is a girl-dad and jazz enthusiast — he relishes in timeliness of this retro-futuristic galaxy where personal alignments are based on ideas and end-goals, as opposed to ethnic similarities and planetary prejudices. Schön! caught up with the real-life Bebop-buff to discuss his approach to getting Jet right, memorable responses from fans regarding his portrayal, and the sparkle — and surprise — that serendipity brings to life.  First thing’s first: let’s unpack Cowboy Bebop! I read that you had a preexisting awareness of… Read more »

Schön! 41 digital cover | scott speedman

As Scott Speedman joins the cast of You, he talks to Schön! about how he’s getting out of his own headspace and why he wouldn’t say no to a Felicity reboot. Casting your inhibitions aside and just saying ‘yes’ can be easier said than done. It’s a concept that has taken Scott Speedman time to get his head around but, with years of experience helping him come into his own, the seasoned actor is becoming more comfortable with the idea of being in the limelight. With a host of upcoming projects, working with the likes of Lena Dunham and David Cronenberg, along with his hotly anticipated role in Season 3 of fan-favourite You, Speedman isn’t shying away from anything. One of the only good things about getting older, Speedman argues, is that it helps you let go of some of your anxieties and start to feel a little more relaxed about being out there. “I said no to a lot early in my career,” he recalls. “Some of the stuff I’m able to do now I would have shied away from back then and not leaned in as much as I could’ve done… I’m saying yes to things more easily… Read more »

interview | jack farthing

Posted by & filed under culture.

Recently acclaimed for his role as Charles in the royal drama film Spencer, Jack Farthing is an actor who should be on your radar. Previously, Farthing could be recognised for his roles in shows like Poldark; now, as he prepares for the release of his new project The Lost Daughter, Schön! speaks with the actor about playing royalty, what he’s learned from his roles, his upcoming series for Prime Video and the BBC and more. Hello Jack! How has life been treating you these days? Hi Schön! Pretty well, thanks — all things considered.  You’ve recently attracted attention and acclaim for your role as Charles in Spencer. What did you find most challenging about embodying Prince Charles? Lots of challenges with this one, but the biggest for sure was trying to steer away from an impression towards something that felt more alive and better suited to the world that Pablo and Steven were creating. It was a process of watching, reading, listening to as much as I could; studying him, his words, his life; and then letting it all go when we got there, and trying to stay free and open and instinctive. With mixed success. What drew you to the… Read more »

i’m a rolling stone | tj atoms interview

Posted by & filed under culture.

Starring as Wu-Tang Clan’s own Ol’ Dirty Bastard (aka Russell Jones) in the Hulu show Wu-Tang: An American Saga, TJ Atoms talks to Schön! about playing the role of ODB and his own creative background. Much like ODB, Atoms proudly hails from the rap scene, as a rapper himself and with his involvement with rap collective The Bakery Boys. Whilst the series was recently renewed for a third season, this one is also the last – but it doesn’t end there for Atoms. A clear multihyphenate talent in areas like skateboarding, rapping, producing and acting, Atoms also discusses what future projects lay ahead for him. One of these includes a Black skateboarding film with director Kevin Nelson, who also directed Atoms in the upcoming Phels High with Omari Hardwick. Atoms has a lot to talk about — and Schön! joins him now. The other actors on the series were able to talk and work directly with the Wu-Tang Clan, but of course Ol’ Dirty Bastard (Russell Jones), your character’s real-life counterpart, unfortunately died in 2004. How did you compensate for this when preparing for the role? I did a lot of energetic work and also a lot of studying on… Read more »

Schön! 41 digital cover | kali uchis

Kali Uchis is ready to start afresh. After a successful year, the Colombian American star looks back at the year she made music on her own terms. The world of Kali Uchis exudes retro glamour, sirenesque sensuality and melancholic mystery. Behind the gilded curtain, her ascent to stardom is rich in empowered defiance. The release of her 2020 album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) is a testimony of Kali’s vision. “I was not supported in the making of this album,” she reveals. “We were told by the [former] head of Virgin EMI, ‘If you do this Spanish shit, you’re on your own.’” She pursued the album anyway. It went on to become one of her most successful projects and gave birth to her viral hit Telepatía, which currently sits at over 1.5 billion streams. Kali looks back on that period of her life as unexpected but destined. “A lot of people felt that bilingual music wouldn’t work, or that as someone whose first album was predominately in English, it would be impossible for me to cross over into the Latin market,” she recalls. “God had a bigger plan, and the organic growth means that now I have some… Read more »

interview | david alvarez

“Love breaks boundaries; fear and hatred makes them.” David Alvarez seamlessly stitches sentence after sentence, using his intellect to make sense of our troubling world. He has a way of presenting his wonderfully dynamic reality — rooted partially in his army experience — whilst also conveying deep emotions as both a dancer and actor. Alvarez has had an intrinsic star quality since he was cast as Billy Elliot on Broadway and won a Tony award at only 15 years old. Today, he manages his own style to create a new rendition of West Side Story’s famed Bernardo, expanding the conversation on what these characters and films represent in our current times. We sit down with David to discuss his army experience, his background as a dancer and how love can break boundaries. Hi David! How is life these days? These days it’s about spending time with my family and close friends and preparing for the next project.  Where were you when you heard you were cast as Bernardo, and how did you feel? I was at home, and it truly was a dream come true. I had wanted to be affiliated with West Side Story since I first saw it… Read more »

Emmy award-winning actor Rome Flynn is bringing much needed Latinx visibility to television via Prime Video’s upcoming series With Love. Created and directed by Gloria Calderón Kellett (One Day at a Time, How I Met Your Mother), the five-episode romantic comedy centres around a Mexican American family and truly portrays the Latino community: one of the most underrepresented peoples on television relative to their population, according to data by Nielsen. In addition to Flynn’s Santiago, who is Afro-Cuban, the show includes gay and trans lead characters who carry the same authenticity. Flynn says, “We cover all these bases in the show in a natural way.” To capture nuances of real life beyond the script, Flynn and his co-stars Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty), Isis King (Shameless, The L Word) and Emeraude Toubia (Shadowhunters) worked together with Calderón Kellett to shape scenes. “She’s a fantastic writer and a great leader,” says Flynn. “She was on set with us every day [which] created a different dynamic; it felt like we were creating something present. For instance, if we were doing a scene and she felt like we should do something different, we just did it. We’d come together and talk about it. It… Read more »

glückeiferwahr | fragrances by mavemade

Posted by & filed under beauty, video.

As niche fragrances become more ubiquitous throughout the industry, German label MAVEMADE wants to take things a step further — creating fragrances imbued with soul and meaning. The label’s diverse collection is both unique and luxurious, including a range of personal fragrances that reflect different aspects of one’s personality. This, in turn, becomes an extension of the wearer’s self. The idea behind this is simple. Scent is a sense deeply tied with memory and emotion; by creating scents associated with each of these specific feelings, the label intends to both reflect and conjure those feelings, allowing for a mastery of sense and self over repeated wearings. By starting one’s day with an empowered scent, they can carry on knowing that they hold the power and emotion that the scent carries — something that will start their day right and keep with them as the day continues. In total, there are nine unique fragrances, all elegantly packed in unique, understated bottles. Each fragrance bears a name that states its purpose, ranging from GLÜCK (happiness/luck) and WAHR (truth) to feelings like WUNDER (wonder) and ZWEIFEL (doubt). With every fragrance comes the encouragement to play, enrich each daily ritual, and set a… Read more »

The Birmingham, Alabama-born and Los Angeles-based actor, Broadway star, musician, television producer and overall visionary Jordan Fisher has been very busy this year. Fisher has been treading towards the pinnacle of supremacy with the release of each project that he’s ever so passionately involved with. The embodiment of each character easily demonstrates Fisher’s artistic meshing abilities and unmatched savoir-faire – all of which are bolstered by his latest project, Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.  This musical explores heavy themes of friendship, grief and mental health in the age of social media. The role of Evan taken on by Fisher is easily one of the most difficult male roles on Broadway today due to not only the amount of emotional turmoil that the actor has to deal with, but also the music, amount of material and stage time. However, Fisher overcomes these obstacles through sheer brilliance. Schön! sat for an exclusive chat with Fisher to discuss his upcoming shows, his forthcoming role, preparation and more.  In recent years, you’ve been starring in some pretty high profile films and musicals. Painter and furniture designer Tejumola Butler Adenuga has taken the role of Art Director at Nosakhari, merging the two artistic forces with beautiful results.  Best knowing for his monochromatic portraits and modern spins on the pointillist movement, London-based artist Tejumola Butler Adenuga has previously done collaborations with labels like Adidas and Dr. Martens — most recently, the artist attracted attention and acclaim for his design project with Soho Home, the interiors collection for Soho House. Now, the sleek minimalism that defines much of Tejumola’s work is joining neatly with the sophisticated, urban vision of Nosakhari creative director Nosa Osadolo, marking a notable and exquisite first foray into the world of luxury leather goods for the artist. As this collaboration solidifies, the label plans to launch Signifier, a new project from the brand coming in January. In celebration of this release, Tejumola will design six conceptual works of art, each one symbolising part of Nosakhari’s new vision and core philosophy — one that elevates difference whilst promoting self-expression. As Schön! speaks to Ariana DeBose, star of the Steven Spielberg-directed West Side Story, she’s still coming down from the high of her first Met Gala. “Erykah Badu complimented my hair in an elevator, and I literally ran into Michael Jordan,” DeBose laughs with disbelief. “We’re coming off a global pandemic, and suddenly we’re able to gather like that – but then you realise you’re also gathering with some of the greatest stars of the fashion industry, art world, sports and entertainment!” Reentering social situations has been difficult for everyone after the past year and a half, but for DeBose, the Met Gala was more than just, in her words, a “surreal” return to normalcy. With her upcoming starring role as Anita in West Side Story and another indie film on the way, being surrounded by fellow celebrities and titans of industry gave her a taste of what her newfound stardom may entail. elemental | compound x save the duck

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Always on the cutting-edge of sustainable, cruelty-free style, Save The Duck is changing the game once again with a new capsule collection collaboration with creative agency Compound. This collaboration feels natural for the two labels — Compound is an agency that stresses the importance of artistry, blending the worlds of art, sports, music and fashion with a future-centred approach. Save The Duck shares a similar vision; through the label’s tradition of creating 100% cruelty-free and vegan products, the brand both presaged contemporary conversations about sustainability and set a high standard for other brands to follow, an innovation that makes Compound a natural complement. For the collaboration, the two labels decided to focus on comfort, durability and practicality, creating a range perfect for the coming winter. The ‘7 Elements’ collection, as the labels have called it, forefronts fire, water, earth, and air  — the four natural elements defined by the Greeks and Romans — and combines them with elements cherished by civilisations through time: wood, metal and ether. “We were thrilled when Set Free approached us about this partnership,” explains Nicolas Bargi, Founder and CEO of Save The Duck. “Compound’s vision and brand beliefs are in line with our mission to… Read more »

Broadway star Reneé Rapp transitions into the world of television with her role in the new HBO Max show The Sex Lives of College Girls. Written by comedy queen Mindy Kaling, Rapp’s television debut showcases her versatility and comedic chops through her character Leighton, an Upper East Sider who is used to getting what she wants. How has this year been for you now that things are getting back to a pre-lockdown normality?    To be blunt, this year has been a rollercoaster. Between the pandemic, filming and turning 21, it’s been all over the place. I’m a strong cocktail of scared and grateful. There have been high highs and low lows. I’ve learned a lot, not only the lingo people use on sets (which, by the way, is confusing — pray for me) but about myself, too. Acting forced me to be vulnerable in ways I haven’t been before. Actor Meagan Good is taking her talents to TV in Prime Video’s new show Harlem. The sitcom follows four friends chasing their careers and navigating The Big Apple’s dating pool. Every era of television has a defining female-led sitcom. The ‘00s were gripped by the escapades of Carrie Bradshaw and co. in Sex and the City and the amusing antics of Girlfriends. Meanwhile, millennials enjoyed Issa Rae’s light-hearted take on romance, career and friendship in Insecure. The latest comedy bringing sex, laughter and heartbreak to our screens is Harlem, starring Meagan Good. “It’s a fun ride where everybody will see a version of themselves, especially those of us who haven’t really seen themselves yet,” she says. If television is a time capsule, then Harlem is a snapshot of what dating is like today for every 30-something in a city. The show feels like a private group chat come to life and comedically captures all the frustrations of searching for love while balancing your career. In its essence, Harlem is the story of the modern woman who is trying to figure it all out. interview | elena satine

Posted by & filed under culture.

The year is 2071, and a series of catastrophic events have thrusted humanity from planet Earth into the galaxy, where we now exercise indomitable control. Punctuated by punchy fight scenes, a multi-layered storyline and a science fiction film-noir backdrop, this scenario sounds like the setup for a live action Tarantino film — except it’s not. It’s Netflix’s reboot of Cowboy Bebop, an iconic 90s anime series with legions of diehard fans eagerly absorbing Netflix’s take on the classic show. Among the stars to scintillate the screen is Georgian-American actress Elena Satine, who plays the role of Julia — a ride-or-die assassin amped with a low-key bravado that is highly seductive and overwhelmingly desirable. In the original anime series, the history of Julia is relegated to the storytelling of other characters; Satine, however, enhances the dynamism of this intergalactic seductress by reinterpreting Julia through her own words and self. The actor talks with Schon! about her reimagined version of Julia, the delicious exasperation of a femme-led car-chase shootout and gearing up for the holiday season with her family.  Hi Elena! So nice to meet you. How familiar were you with Cowboy Bebop prior to joining the cast in the Netflix reboot?… Read more »

the unamerican dream

Posted by & filed under fashion.

What could the “American Dream” have looked like for the Black woman in the 1950s? Although Black America contributed broadly to popular culture throughout the 20th century, the 1950s were a decidedly “whitewashed” decade as seen by the mass media at the time. Black women were hardly, if at all, portrayed in pop culture. The exclusion of BIPOC communities in the “American Dream” born of this era can be clearly seen in the media produced at the time. Magazines were a major contributor to this narrative, especially as the concept of the “Nuclear Family” spread and women were portrayed as housekeepers. From the lens of 1950s Vogue Covers, we depict a rewritten history that is inclusive and inspiring. As the “American Dream” was intended only for whites, our vision of opportunity and freedom that is equitable and inclusive to all of humanity. interview | marcus rutherford

The new Prime Video series The Wheel of Time presents an expansive world — and as Perrin Aybara, English actor Marcus Rutherford is ready to explore it. As the actor’s first major series role, The Wheel of Time is a substantial undertaking; based on the book series by Robert Jordan, the show introduces audiences to a fantasy world full of magic, intrigue and more. Schön! speaks with Rutherford about how an actor can approach such a major project, what he learned from making the first season and what viewers can expect in season two. Before we get into the interview, what’s your earliest memory where you realised you wanted to be an actor? I remember my childminder putting on the film Stand By Me for me when I wanted something to watch one day. It was all I could think about for weeks after: the music, the storyline but most of all the performances. I remember thinking I wanted to be involved in whatever these young lads were doing on screen.  You’re in the The Wheel of Time. What can you tell us about your role in that? I play Perrin Aybara, the gentle giant and local blacksmith in the… Read more »

interview | duran duran

Posted by & filed under culture.

On the band’s new album FUTURE PAST, Duran Duran plays no nostalgia tricks, nor does the group succumb to top 40 gimmicks. Across the album’s 51-minute runtime, Duran Duran presents touches of the dazzling and vigorous sound for which the band has come to be known over an unexpectedly modern, honest and emotionally-resonate core — a reckoning with the tumult of the present, the ghosts that linger from the past and, as the album’s title would suggest, a glimmering hope for a better tomorrow. Accompanied by robust production from Erol Alkan and stand-out additions from the likes of Mark Ronson, Giorgio Moroder, CHAI and more, FUTURE PAST reminds us that even after four decades in the business, Duran Duran still has something to say. Schön! joins John Taylor of the band to discuss success, the new album, teen magazines of yore and more. Hello John. Lovely to chat with you today. How are you doing? How’s life? Gosh, that’s a big question. Obviously, an album launch is always a high-energy situation… You’re just doing everything that you can do to try to give the album a good launch, and then you have to be off on the road for a couple of… Read more »

interview | alexa mansour

Posted by & filed under culture.

Before taking her breakout role in The Walking Dead: World Beyond, it was almost difficult to imagine such a kind and gentle actress like Alexa Mansour playing in the zombie apocalypse drama. Now, having gone deep into the mind of her on-screen character Hope, she’s managed to both show all the hidden traits of her character and showcase her undoubtable talent and professionalism. But acting is not the only creative commitment of 25-year-old Mansour; together with her full-time acting work, she’s currently launching her music career. Schön joins Mansour to discuss her career, childhood, experience working on The Walking Dead: World Beyond and so much more. Your mum worked in show business, which gave you a taste of the industry from a young age. How did you envision your acting career in your childhood, and how does that vision compare to your present reality? I knew I wanted to be an actress from a young age. I started lessons when I was around 12 years old. I would always tell my mom I wanted “the world to know me”. I definitely didn’t envision myself being a part of a reality show like my mom’s (or reality TV in general), but… Read more »

Schön! 41 digital cover | nicholas galitzine

Posted by & filed under culture, fashion.

He may be Cinderella’s prince, but Nicholas Galitzine proves to be even more charming in person than on screen. He talks to Schön! about playing tortured characters and taking each day at a time. We all know Cinderella, but the latest adaptation, starring pop sensation Camila Cabello and Frozen’s Idina Menzel, turns the conventional storyline on its head. “It breaks down a lot of stigmas and clichés that we associate with the fairy tale genre,” says the film’s leading man. Yet it does keep to some traditions, casting the role of Robert, Prince Charming, to Hollywood’s latest heartthrob, the strappingly handsome Galitzine. You might recognise the 26-year-old Brit from a variety of roles over the years, from a troubled teen and heroin addict in the Netflix series Chambers alongside Uma Thurman to a misunderstood closeted musician in the Irish film Handsome Devil. “Cinderella is probably the most out of my comfort zone that I’ve been,” Galitzine admits. “I’m quite used to playing fairly tortured characters!” He will continue this streak with his next project Purple Hearts, in which he will portray a conservative marine and former addict. “I was struck by how topical it felt,” Galitzine tells us. “The film… Read more »

interview | ash santos

If you don’t know Ash Santos, be sure to get acquainted fast. Her first role in Hollywood was merely four years ago as a pivotal character in the cult series American Horror Story, and since then, her career has been on an upward trajectory. This November she will star alongside Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes in True Story on Netflix, her second Netflix production following the vampire thriller Night Teeth released earlier this year. Scöhn! catches up with the non-stop actress to discuss motherhood, Hollywood and how acting has always been her first love.  Your career has taken off; can you recall when you first got the acting bug?  I was born with it, although I was a really shy little girl. I remember being little in New York and the only thing I wanted to do was act, but my parents didn’t know how to get me started. My first time acting, I was eight years old. We had this theatre summer camp in my hometown and I begged my mom to sign me up. We were doing the play Lewis and Clark, and I booked the role of Sacagawea. That was my first time ever having to memorise… Read more »

high tea | nick merzetti interview

Colourblind photographer Nick Merzetti is taking viewers on a brand new journey. Inspired in large part by Alice in Wonderland, Merzetti joins creative director Alba Feinaj to tell a story of dreamlike adventure, starring model Brett and styled by Amber Watkins. For more insight into the series, Schön! joins Merzetti to discuss his career, influences and High Tea. The last time we spoke was in February. What has changed in your life since then? Coronavirus is fading away, so work is ramping up! Honestly, I’m dying to get out and see a new city. It’s been too long. I think we are all in the same boat! Less time grinding for pay, more time making memories! You mentioned that you’re a believer in psychedelics and their potential role in the artistic process. How has your experience with psychedelics shaped your creative vision? Psychedelics help my process in two important ways. First, they help you dial into the beauty in everything. If you’re painting, just the act of the paint leaving the brush might ignite your curiosity. You can’t help create in a different way when the process itself is fascinating. Second, psychedelics help ground me emotionally. Mindfulness, meditation and psychedelics have a… Read more »

stories must be told | kindred arts in philadelphia, pa

Posted by & filed under culture.

You may refer to art as soft power, but never underestimate its capability to portray realities of life and potency to shift changes in human society. Marsha Reid is one of those whose main force of activism is centralised in art. Being an interdisciplinary arts presenter, arts activist and founder of Kindred Arts, she discovers the hidden and unspoken heritage of African-American culture through public displays. Her latest curation, Monumental Tour, is a touring exhibition that empowers social change through the arts. Schön joins Marsha to discuss her relationship with art, activism and Monumental Tour. How did your relationship with the art world begin? By trade, I am a tour producer and performance practice curator. A few years after emigrating to the U.S., I joined the team at Lincoln Center that programs and produces the Lincoln Center Outdoor festivals. After four seasons at Lincoln Center I moved on to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I managed the Live Arts programs presenting concerts, lectures, festivals and large-scale performance related to artifacts and exhibitions. Touring these monuments is a natural extension of that career experience.  When did you realise that art can both convey a strong message and potentially facilitate social… Read more »
