interview | lovie simone

Posted by & filed under culture.

Lovie Simone is crafting a whole new future. Now that her long-awaited follow-up to cult classic The Craft is finally out on Video on Demand via Sony, the young actress has plenty of other things to get excited about. “I am looking forward to my birthday with my twin sister,” she says. “I’m ready for Sag season.” Simone joined The Craft: Legacy with a slight hesitation. The original film was a surprise hit, garnering considerable attention and earnings despite its relatively small budget. When the opportunity arose for a reboot came along, Simone knew she had to approach the project differently. “I didn’t want to mimic the original,” she explains. “I wanted to be true to Tabby and true to the modern witch story.”  Still, the new Craft has some nods to the 1996 original — for one, Simone gets to give her own take on the iconic “we’re the weirdos, mister” line. Lots of references to the original are peppered throughout the film, and Simone says watching the fan responses to those references has been a joy. “I like that people found the Easter eggs from the original film while still viewing our film as its own movie,”… Read more »

“Melanie is an editorial by Daziell (Clara Casas) in partnership with Border Ensemble’s Project Muses. Muses is a monthly podcast series with each show centred around an inspiring female personality, whose story is told through a soundscaped interview format, sonically exploring themes of sexuality, senses of self, relationships in urban settings and how natural and learned behaviours shape our creative and intimate relationships and gender norms. All of this portrayed in live-recorded eclectic DJ mixes by artists from the label who incorporate feminist storytelling of their inspirations; curated blends of electronic experience, from atmospheric minimal to electronica and leftfield techno.” This editorial was photographed by Daziell (Clara Casas). POAN | welcome to “sinai”

Posted by & filed under beauty, fashion, video.

POAN’s latest collection takes us on a journey through Egypt — all the way from its biblical past to its present day cultural explosion. SINAI, which launched earlier this month, is an emotionally rich celebration of love through time with the diverse cultural history of Egypt at its core.  Rather than focusing on the pharaohs and scarabs that one may commonly associate with Egyptian history, POAN founder and designer Georg Weissacher took a more comprehensive approach to his inspiration. The present crisis has caused many to reconsider their idea of normality — a notion present throughout Egypt’s history. As Egypt has seen empires rise and fall, their culture, style and sense of ‘normal’ has adjusted accordingly. In SINAI, all of those rapid and cataclysmic shifts have been embraced in beautiful form. As Weissacher explains, “Harmony Through Diversity, a prominent brand value and theme which we encourage and celebrate through our name first and foremost, being tackled this time around through a fresh notion of love and at a point where humanity globally is also pushing a similar message feels important for us as a brand.”   Much of the collection centres around the Egypt of recent generations as… Read more »

Even with a million little things going on in the world right now, rising actress Lizzy Greene is full of heart and continues to share her passion for art. Despite acting taking the lead in her life, the actress has been creating art since she was old enough to talk. To her, it’s simply second nature. During lockdown, Greene has been drawing inspiration for her art projects from world events — which connects directly to her most recent role as Sophie Dixon in the ensemble drama A Million Little Things, a series that is all about tough topics and the power of family and love. Greene is already a fan favourite from her Nickelodeon days, but she reaches new depths as a stubborn Sophie navigates the many trials of teenage years. Read on to find out what inspires Greene and what she told Schön! about how she and Sophie Dixon are similar in real life.   Off-screen, during lockdown, you have been creating art! Tell us how you got into art and what it means to you.  It’s something I’ve done since I was old enough to talk, and to me, it’s become a mindless thing that helps spark creative thinking. bad habits | meet the designer

Posted by & filed under fashion, video.

Bad Habits is an up-and-coming brand out of London with a big mission: to create a more ethical way of living for its wearers. Incorporating sustainably-sourced fabrics into every one of its pieces, the label produces a wide range of timeless looks with a characteristically natural approach. Every piece made by Bad Habits is limited-run, preventing the label from creating substantial waste, and dyed using hues from plants and naturally occurring ingredients like Fustic trees, Chlorophyllin, Cutch and more. Through all of these production changes, they hope to break the many bad habits of the present-day fashion industry — one of the inspirations behind its name. Schön! spoke with the Bad Habits founders to hear more about the brand and its SS21 collection. You say your “goal is to provide the most ethical way of living.” What does that mean to you? It means the world to us. So we start with manufacturing locally in London to control our carbon footprint, and then we hand-dye small capsule collections to minimise the waste. It’s minimalism for us, but minimalism doesn’t have to mean solid colours and basic styles; minimalism in our minds is concealed wardrobes with a special touch of… Read more »

“The world’s changing… we’ve all sensed it.” It’s both a fitting introduction to the second series trailer for His Dark Materials and an appropriate tagline for this year. For those still catching up on the BBC One and HBO hit, His Dark Materials is an adventure that transports viewers to parallel universes filled with complex characters and fantastical creatures. A standout among those many complex characters is Will Parry, played by Amir Wilson.   Wilson has already had quite the year; he starred as Tiuri in Netflix’s The Letter for the King, a journey that had him learning sword-fighting and horse-riding in New Zealand. In the second series of His Dark Materials, Wilson co-leads heroic escapades alongside Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson and plenty more. While the young British actor hints of darkness to come, he believes a key message from the show is to never give up on hope. Wilson caught up with Schön! about life in lockdown and what we need to know about Will.  This year has been quite the adventure! What has been keeping you busy during quarantine? Overall, I managed to watch all of Money Heist in like four days or something crazy. I also managed… Read more »

Kelvin Harrison, Jr. is making a change. With a Netflix film and Euphoria Season Two on the horizon, the 26-year-old actor is taking his career in a new direction — and garnering considerable acclaim. For Harrison, 2020 has been a year of personal renewal. He’s slowing down, engaging at length with his team about the future of his career, whilst picking up meditation on the side. “I’m taking care of myself,” Harrison says in summary. “I’m working out, reading the books I love, watching the shows I love, communicating with friends I love — and cutting people off who may have not brought me joy.” He laughs. “Anything that disturbs my peace has got to go!” Even with this newfound ease, Harrison’s present peace is sure to be fleeting. This year has already seen the release of two of his films, and his latest endeavour, the Aaron Sorkin-led The Trial of the Chicago 7, will be released through Netflix on 16th October. The highly anticipated film has him playing activist and famed Black Panther Fred Hampton, a role that could be emblematic of his new career trajectory. “I think right now I’m attracted to — and I attract —… Read more »

red september ss21 | kidult

Posted by & filed under fashion, video.

KIDULT, the Spring Summer 2021 collection from Red September, is an exploration unlike any the brand has taken before. Founded by Olga Vasyukova, Red September has been creating innovative and intriguing works since its first collection in AW2019. For KIDULT, the brand is continuing this experimentation, creating patchwork pieces emblazoned with childlike drawings, chaotically cut and sewn denim and so much more. Throughout every piece, there is a potent sense of rebellion — a balance of strength and tenderness that matches the spirit of the collection’s title. As a former engineer, every one of Vasyukova’s cuts and mergers feel as though they’re made with mathematical precision, a sharp contrast to the childish subject matter and occasionally playful colours and forms.  Schön! spoke to Vasyukova to learn more about Red September and KIDULT. How has Red September changed or grown since we first talked in April?
А summer in quarantine is practically a lifetime. We have new people in the team — we need to check whether we can go through the zombie apocalypse together or our paths will soon be parted. echo boomers | interview with writer + director seth savoy

Posted by & filed under culture.

Echo Boomers is a chaotic romp with an activist twist — and to hear writer and director Seth Savoy tell it, it’s about to be your favourite film of the year. The film stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Alex Pettyfer, Hayley Law and others as a team of twenty-something bandits who break into the homes of the Chicago’s elites, sell their possessions for personal gain and leave a political message in their wake. All of their actions occur under the watchful eye of one Mel Donnelly, portrayed in the film by Michael Shannon — story elements that come together to make a supremely fun film.  Echo Boomers is now available in cinemas and via video on demand, but Schön! managed to talk to Savoy before the release to get some insight into the filmmaking process. Hello Seth! Echo Boomers is coming out soon. How are you feeling about that? I’m hyped, dude. I’m hyped. We did a kind of a first preview drive-in last night in Chicago for those who can’t go to the theater for health reasons… There was almost a tornado in Chicago that night and it was super rainy, but they packed it out. Everyone’s car was wet from the rain,… Read more »

Carlos, Clara and Bea are three young Andalusians living in Madrid, Spain. Andalusian cultural identity has often been linked to negative stereotypes related to poverty and lack of education. Our symbols are exploited by those who see in them an exoticism economically profitable. However, our accent and customs are frequently caricatured and ignored in the rest of the country. The protest movements in Andalusia in favor of the enhancement of our cultural elements are currently rising. With this piece we would like to be part of these movements, to reappropriate our symbols with a young and modern vision, hand in hand with a story free of stereotypes and complexes. Our main inspiration for this film was Federico García Lorca, an Andalusian poet who was murdered at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War because of his homosexuality and political thoughts. This is a love letter to our origins, to freedom. The above text was provided by the filmmakers. The film was directed by Bea Hohenleiter, Clara Cumpián and Carlos Folmo and features Gadea Candela, Angela Buquet and Celia Bermejo. m.j.e studios | meet the designer

Posted by & filed under fashion.

For designer Mcjordan Erhunmwunse, it’s not enough to just design clothes — it’s imperative to him that his designs are equal parts empowering and expressive, complementing the wearer rather than overpowering them. After four years studying at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, the Maryland native found himself on a different path than his classmates who were interested in working for established fashion labels. Instead, Erhunmwunse honed in on his craft and created M.J.E Studios, a brand that embodies street and youth culture and blends it with contemporary fashion. The designer is powered by the mantra of “driven by community,” a notion that when you invest in what is around you, it will become the catalyst to something greater. M.J.E Studios is proof of that. Schön! spoke with Erhunmwunse about the creation of M.J.E Studios, his latest collection, and what his goals are for M.J.E Studios. You studied at FIT — how did that learning environment help inspire you and shape your designs? Very hard four years, but full of growth. I’d say first that the environment conditioned me to work at the pace of a designer/creator — constantly looking for inspiration and working towards the… Read more »

Schön! presents | the year of return

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Schön! proudly presents The Year of Return, a short film directed by Sofala Mai. The director included the following text about the piece. The Year of Return is a fashion film that explores social isolation and its effect on creativity and identity. Through the use of symbolism, movement, and poetry this short film reflects on the process in which an artist finds inspiration, while also operating through the lens of destruction and grief. The film illustrates the reckoning that we all seem to be experiencing and shines light on a personal transformation during this period of unrest. This project represents my personal journey of losing myself for a while, and finally returning to that self in a radical way. I’ve dedicated this piece to showcasing the beauty and creativity of black and brown women.   Beabadoobee is reviving Grunge for the Gen-Z masses. Her first song became a viral TikTok sensation, and now she hopes her poetic debut album Fake It Flowers will inspire a new generation of women in Rock. Beabadoobee is single-handedly making Indie Rock cool again. Hip Hop is 2020’s most-streamed genre, which makes Bea’s digital rise all the more intriguing. The 20-year-old planned to become a nursery teacher before she got kicked out of Sixth Form. Her dad bought her a second-hand guitar to kill her boredom, and that’s when she wrote her first song Coffee. The sweet acoustic number took on a life of its own after a friend uploaded it to Soundcloud, and its YouTube re-upload quickly gained 300,000 views. “I guess it happened without me realising,” laughs Bea. Two years later, Canadian singer Powfu sampled the chorus in his viral TikTok hit Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head), which currently has over half a billion Spotify streams. “It’s one of my purest songs,” Bea smiles. “I never really expected that to happen.” Bea’s lo-fi Grunge sound is a Gen-Z interpretation of the ‘90s nostalgia she grew up on. slava mogutin | polaroid rage + black is beautiful @ galerie kernweine

Posted by & filed under culture.

He’s made a name for himself as an iconoclastic and multidisciplinary photographer, filmmaker (including a stint in the porn industry), writer, and visual artist at the forefront of queer activism. But before the reverence and representation by the finest galleries, museums and publications, Slava Mogutin was a victim of homophobic vitriol and hostility in Russia, where he was one of the country’s first openly gay public figures and a prominent journalist in the post-Perestroika period. He earned even greater infamy and ruthless persecution for attempting to orchestrate the first same-sex marriage in Moscow. Forced to seek political asylum in the US in 1994, Mogutin has since built a prolific career for himself while continuing to shed light on his community and the issues plaguing it.  Mogutin is currently jointly showing Polaroid Rage and Black is Beautiful at the Galerie Kernweine in Stuttgart, Germany. Shot over the last two years between New York, Los Angeles and Berlin, they are a tender tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement and his community, including contemporaries, collaborators and friends such as Durk Dehner, Genesis P-Orridge, and Buck Angel. In the wake of the Pope’s acknowledgement of same-sex unions and as the US hurdles… Read more »

Founder and Creative Director of Les Benjamins Bunyamin Aydin is the Istanbul-based designer redefining modern streetwear. A brand that looks both forward and backward for inspiration, Les Benjamins’ latest collection pays homage to the explosive energy of the Turkish psychedelic rock scene of the ’70s whilst simultaneously capturing the rebellious spirit of youth culture today. The art of storytelling is at the heart of Les Benjamins’ ethos. Every piece is an invitation to a world that blends the past, present and future of fashion, resulting in collections that above all celebrate the beauty found within juxtaposition. Les Benjamins’ aesthetic is truly unique in its ability to merge a respect of tradition with an unapologetic sense of modernity. Schön! caught up with Aydin to hear about everything from his broad range of cultural influences to what’s next for Les Benjamins. Introduce us to the collection we see in these photos. What inspired this series of works? The psychedelic rock movement in Turkey in the ’70s. Most people don’t know the artists Baris Manco, Cem Karaca, 3 Hurel, Mogullular, and more. With the importance of sustainability in mind, luxury Italian retailer Luisa Via Roma has launched LVRSustainable, a new section devoted to offering the best sustainable looks while benefiting social and environmental causes. Under this section, it has collaborated with Save the Duck to host its Fall/Winter 2020-2021 collection — a collection filled with conscious, sustainability-minded design. The collection takes a minimalist yet edgy approach, utilising classic outdoor jacket forms made with sustainable materials. Every piece is crafted from high-quality animal-free materials and features sustainably-sourced windproof and water resistant fabric.   If you’ve caught Jordan Loughran playing Tempest on HBO Max’s sci-fi series Raised by Wolves, you’re certainly already familiar with her extraordinary storytelling ability. What you might not know is that her interest in compelling characters stretches far beyond her work as an actress. Jordan tackles complexity with ease and, to that end, is currently in development for her next short film. Whether before the camera or behind it, Jordan is unafraid to approach the many structural issues of both the film industry and society as a whole — and she does so with refreshing authenticity. Schön! caught up with Jordan to find out more about all of her exciting projects and happily learned that she still manages to find time for the odd bit of Animal Crossing. Hello Jordan! ITS 2020 | here we belong

Posted by & filed under fashion.

This year, the International Talent Support Awards took a different form. While the award show is typically a festive occasion held live in Trieste, this year, the circumstances of the pandemic took the award ceremony to a digital platform, with a jury awarding finalists their awards as they streamed in live from afar. While the form of the award show may have been different, the designers celebrated by the ceremony brought the same level of talent and drive that we’ve come to expect from the ITS Awards. Olivia Rubens took home the ITS Responsible Fashion Award for her responsibility-minded experimental knitwork. Noa Baruch delighted the jury with an experimental take on denim, earning the Diesel Award in the process. Additionally, Felipe Fiallo received the ITS Fondazione Ferragamo Award for his work combining sustainable materials, comfort and design. For the 2020 awards, the esteemed jury was composed of an eclectic blend of talents from across the creative spectrum ranging from people like singer/songwriter Mika to figures like Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, and Tim Blanks, editor-at-large with The Business of Fashion. The unfolding events of this year could have been taken straight from a dystopian movie. Like all of us, Erin Moriarty continues to grapple with the sheer brutality of the pandemic but is taking each day as it comes. Moriarty’s breakout role as Annie January in the superhero pastiche The Boys has also provided some much-needed respite from the gloom around us. While fans get ready to immerse themselves once again in a world where superheroes exist, Moriarty considers why the series now hits even closer to home. No industry, including film and television, has been left untouched by the magnitude of the pandemic. Like many, Moriarty has found the past few months challenging. “Under circumstances like these, I don’t thrive,” she admits. “I’ve just been trying to figure out the things that keep me grounded and sane, but it’s hard to avoid the inevitable funk that we’re all feeling at the moment.” Reconnecting with simple life pleasures has stopped Moriarty from spiralling. “I’ve been taking it day by day just to get through in the… Read more »

Jeff Wilbusch’s life has been far from conventional. Born in Israel into a Hasidic Jewish community, Wilbusch left at the age of thirteen to pursue an education in The Netherlands before becoming a full-time actor in various locations around Europe. Even as Schön! speaks to him today, he confesses he’s living out of a suitcase, ready at any moment to set off to wherever his diverse and already fairly storied career takes him next. “It’s something I really like,” he says of his newly mobile life. “It’s something that is really freeing to me right now. Maybe one day will come where I will want to have a place where my base is, but now, I have a kind of flow. It’s really nice.” A seasoned actor of both stage and screen, Wilbusch’s popularity recently exploded with the release of Netflix’s Unorthodox. Wilbusch portrays Moishe, a troubled man who accompanies another character, Yanky, to Berlin, Germany in pursuit of Yanky’s wife who has fled their Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based ultra-orthodox community. The series was groundbreaking in a number of respects; its “inspired by true events” story received considerable praise, and its heavy use of Yiddish was a major first in the… Read more »

Posted by & filed under culture.

Whether getting to the heart of a character on screen or lending her voice to activism, Paige Hurd is making a name for herself. Along with her fellow castmates in the fan favourite, Power Book II: Ghost, Hurd is helping to show just how important it is for the traditional Hollywood representation narrative to be reframed. Her role as the President’s daughter on the popular soap drama, The Oval, has confirmed her own fears about the chaos currently playing out across the Trump administration. Away from the screen, Hurd is letting her voice be heard as a passionate advocate for young adults and children with disabilities.  Following on from the success of Power, featuring 50 Cent, Power Book II: Ghosts follows the story of Tariq as he strikes out on his own. Hurd plays the role of Lauren Baldwin, a dedicated student who has just started at Stansfield University where she meets Tariq. She enthuses, “I just wanted to be a part of the Power universe, no matter what. So when I was able to read my character breakdown I was super excited. Lauren and I don’t have much in common which is exactly why I love this role.”     As an ardent Power fan herself, Hurd… Read more »

interview | amanda collin’s “rebirth”

Posted by & filed under culture.

Editor’s Note: This feature contains spoilers for the first season of ‘Raised by Wolves’. Created by Aaron Guzikowski and executively produced by Ridley Scott, HBO Max’s critically-acclaimed show Raised by Wolves finished airing its first season in early October. If you still have not watched the series, you’ll want to catch up for the already-renewed second season and to see Amanda Collin exploding onto the scene with deadly screams. Collin plays Mother on the show, an android in the distant future trying to save the human race on a new planet. But Mother is not just a caregiver — she’s also a powerful war-machine, which explains her lethal abilities. Collin shared with Schön! that, with such an original premise, intuition played a big role in portraying Mother and filling out her many details. Collin is humble about her contributions to the show, but she had already proved her talents and range in her Danish films A Horrible Woman, A Conspiracy of Faith, and more. Here, Schön! catches up with the rising global star to discuss her first Hollywood project, the first of many to come. In A Horrible Woman, your character, Marie, is surprisingly strong. Your character in Raised by Wolves,… Read more »

nisi liu presents ‘kaidan’ | meet the designer

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Designer Nisi Liu takes us across the world to welcome us to Kaidan, a story inspired by classic films and the designer’s global history. By embodying the ideas of film, Liu channels a sort of otherworldly spirit, beckoning the tragic moods of cinema forth into a warped yet still utterly naturalistic world. Schön! spoke to Liu about the designs and the story of the piece. Can you introduce us to Kaidan and your inspiration for these pieces? The story originally happened in Japan. It tells the story of a husband abandoning his wife because he falls in love with other women, and then his wife turns into a resentful spirit. My inspiration comes from the original Kaidan story, but what I express in the collection is the story of the husband going out because of the war and the wife becoming a ghost… Since the backstory is located in Japan, the overall characteristics will be more integrated into the oriental elements. I was inspired by those fragile loves; they are fleeting but very charming. How did you first become familiar with Kaidan? What does it mean to you? I watched Kaidan by Masaki Kobayashi a long time ago. This… Read more »

interview | benjamin levy aguilar

Posted by & filed under culture.

It’s difficult to know where to begin to talk about Benjamin Levy Aguilar, one of the stars of the new Kim Cattrall-led Fox drama Filthy Rich. Born in Guatemala, the actor spent years playing professional football in Milan, Italy, before returning home to work as a security guard during the presidential election. Back in his home country, Aguilar trained in fighting, picking up Krav Maga, and other styles before eventually venturing to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. “It feels like it’s been different lives that I’ve lived, like all in different stages,” laughs Aguilar. “It’s so crazy.” While Aguilar is now a lead on a major network television programme, “acting was actually never part of the dream,” he says. “Acting was like a different dimension… I didn’t even know you could make money out of it or have a career out of it. I didn’t know there was such a thing as acting classes.” Instead, his motivation to act came from a random moment of self-discovery that occurred while he was waiting in line to renew his driving licence. “I was depressed and unhappy with my life. I was burnt out. I told my mom I was… Read more »

Sissi Pohle and Patrick Scherzer is the duo bringing vintage styles into your daily wardrobe. Through their shop outofuseberlin — a project based in the German capital focused on giving chic vintage clothing a whole new life — the team has curated a shopping and styling experience that celebrates the best looks from all over the world and every era of history. Today, the pair has joined up with CHANEL Eyewear, matching the fashion house’s stylish looks with hand-selected vintage works. Operating both online and in-person thanks to a partnership with H&M’s Mitte Garten, outofuseberlin hopes to encourage people to incorporate more vintage looks into their lives. But while vintage may be the duo’s passion, their success is rooted partially in their long-running relationship with, and appreciation for, major fashion houses like CHANEL. Schön! spoke with Pohle and Scherzer to hear more about outofuseberlin and their work with CHANEL. You both have a history in production and fashion. Why did you start focusing on vintage? We started going to different flea markets on Sundays a few years ago, and we were addicted to the rush of finding beautiful treasures. To this day, it gives us great pleasure to go… Read more »

interview | lucas bravo

Posted by & filed under culture.

It’s October 14, and Lucas Bravo is sitting in a Budapest flat scrolling through Instagram. Since the release of Emily in Paris at the beginning of the month, the latest Netflix series from mega-creator Darren Star, Bravo’s popularity has exploded; he went from around ten thousand Instagram followers to well over a million in just a few days, and messages of support have been pouring into his inbox from all over the globe. While he’d love to meet his new fans in person, Bravo is currently quarantined inside his rented Hungarian home until he can return to set for his upcoming film Mrs Harris Goes to Paris — and thus, the endless Insta-scroll continues. “It’s hard, you know?” Bravo starts with a happy huff. “All your friends tell you, ‘Don’t get sucked into your phone and try not to reply to everybody.’ But I have a lot of time on my hands, and it’s just so flattering, and I feel so grateful.” He chuckles. “I’m just so humbled by all this. I want to be able to give back as much as possible.” The Netflix series sees Bravo playing Gabriel, Emily’s chef neighbour-turned-(spoiler) lover. Gabriel is an object of… Read more »

bedroom fantasies: staying hysterically glamorous in the love house

Writer Caroline Krager, stylist Marko Vrbos and photographer Anna Rosova have joined forces to tell a story of personal space, how it is created and the daydreams born within it. Bedroom Fantasies: Staying hysterically glamorous in the Love house explores these ideas, pairing styles from up-and-coming designers with interviews with the designers themselves. Krager leads this Schön! exclusive Q&A. Christoph Ritter 26 years old. From Austria. Studied at Central Saint Martins, Royal Academy Antwerp, and Polimoda. Started their brand Christoph Ritter Studio in Autumn 2019. The goal is to produce clothes sustainably and ethically whilst being desirable and aesthetically thrilling. Ritter creates clothes for a future where fashion is being used as a force of good. Their biggest career achievement so far is an event at Sketch during last season’s LFW. How would you describe your childhood home, and how would you describe your bedroom? What colour was it, what did you do in there, how important was it to you? As a child, I grew up in multiple homes because of my family’s circumstances. I mainly stayed with my mum but sometimes my dad, grand-aunt, and grandmas as well, so I was used to being passed around to whoever… Read more »

Not long ago, Darren Barnet was working at a West Hollywood SoulCycle, parking a mile away just to avoid a $4 fee. Today, he’s the lead of a top Netflix Original series. “Man, I was really put through the ringer,” Barnet sighs. The 29-year-old Never Have I Ever star is currently in New York City working on the production side of an unnamed project. Now that he’s deeper in the Hollywood machine, Barnet is much more open to discussing the nuts and bolts of the business. “I don’t think I ever want to do [production] again,” he admits, reviewing his current workload. “Seeing all the numbers and money floating around stresses me out.” While most stars on the rise get to experience their come-up in person, Barnet’s introduction to fame was a quiet one; COVID-19 meant the launch and press tour for his Netflix Original series played out entirely in his Los Angeles flat. “It was definitely a smoother transition into fame, with it being all from home,” he starts. “I loved it, though. I’m absolutely honoured to be part of this show. [Creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher] really let us play and find ourselves in the characters,… Read more »

interview | tom austen

Posted by & filed under culture, video.

When Marvel came calling, British actor Tom Austen couldn’t say no. Helping the comic book conglomerate make one of its first forays into horror with the hotly anticipated Helstrom Hulu series, Austen’s compelling performance as Daimon Helstrom proves the supernatural is a little closer to reality.  Based on the comic book series Son of Satan, Helstrom marks an exciting departure from the typical superhero universe we’ve come to know and love. It follows the sinister tale of two siblings as they set out to hunt the worst of humanity while coming to terms with the trauma of their past. Joining the Marvel franchise is a rite of passage for many esteemed actors and Austen couldn’t be happier to be in the fold.   “It’s crazy – when you find out that you’ve got the job you get a call from an unknown number and the first three things you hear are ‘welcome to Marvel,’” the actor tells Schön!. While the expectations of the comic’s zealous fanbase might have been too much for some, Austen has felt overwhelmingly supported. “So much of the Marvel content is driven by this incredible fan base,” he insists. “So, on the one hand, you feel a… Read more »

Even in the desert, one can make a home. By handling the raw nature of this arid land with a humanistic approach, YOSTER creates jewellery that takes elements of its surroundings and incorporates them into lively designs. With the label’s history melted into its designs, each YOSTER piece tells a story of its origin. Schön! spoke to the label founder to get a better insight into the works it currently has in production and where it hopes to go in the future. You grew up on the edge of a desert. How did that influence the creation and ethos of YOSTER? Growing up in Be’er-Sheba, a peripheral city located at the edge of Israel’s desert, had a major influence on my art. The roughness, the textures, the colours and the shapes all come from there. The desert expresses space and freedom for me. Everything is open in the desert and for me, the physical structure casts on the consciousness. Schön! 39 digital cover | victoria pedretti

Bright new star Victoria Pedretti is poised to thrill tens of millions again — this time with The Haunting of Bly Manor. Recently seen as Love in the Netflix hit You, Pedretti began her television career two years ago in the The Haunting of Hill House. In follow-up show Bly Manor, she plays Dani, an au pair who looks after two orphaned children in a country estate. While other cast members also return, Bly Manor is a whole new haunting based on the 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw as well as an amalgamation of Henry James’ gothic romance tales. Pedretti touches on a theme she hopes will inspire conversation among viewers: how love and sacrifice are often misconstrued. She says, “These children have been told that they need to sacrifice to show that they care. We teach children this in many different ways; if they have been traumatised or abused they are told that their life, their safety and love require sacrifice.” But in this story, the children are surrounded by a group of people who “reeducate and encourage them to do what is right, to do what feels good.” In tandem with this concept, Pedretti says,… Read more »

laura petzke presents “confluence” | meet the designer

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Working with a futuristic yet minimalist approach, Laura Petzke crafts clean looks with an otherworldly feel. “Confluence”, a collection created as part of a university project, is an ideal expression of Laura’s work, telling a story of a time traveller going through various times and places and picking up influences along the way.  Still a student, Laura used this collection to branch out from her typically wearable, sportier work. Schön! caught up with Laura to explore “Confluence” and hear what she has planned for the future. You did an internship in the Iris van Herpen atelier. What did you learn from that experience?  Indeed! During my time at Iris van Herpen, I experienced the creative evolution of an Haute Couture collection. I was deeply involved in the sewing and creative process of the SS20 Sensory Seas collection. My responsibilities ranged from material research to stitching toiles, reaching out to various companies, assisting a photoshoot, working on final dresses, and finally assisting and working backstage at Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week. The internship taught me a lot! Not only did I improve my stitching skills and gain new techniques, but I also figured out that there is no limit when… Read more »

To call Ashleigh LaThrop anything other than a powerhouse would be an understatement. From gracing television screens on critically acclaimed shows like The 100, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Kominsky Method, it’s evident that LaThorp strives to ensure every project she works on is different from the last. Whether it’s a conscious decision or not, LaThorp’s filmography has touched on some of the biggest social issues of the 21st century — from women’s bodily autonomy as she portrayed a handmaid to her latest role on Amazon’s Utopia, a series about a group of comic book-obsessed young adults who find themselves mixed up with a dark government conspiracy. In the series, Ashleigh plays Becky, a postgraduate student who is convinced the graphic novel ‘The Utopia Experiments’ is connected to her father’s death. In a true testament to the phrase “art imitates life” Becky and the other characters in Utopia are dealing with their very own viral pandemic plaguing the city of Chicago. Schön! spoke with Ashleigh about her role as Becky on Utopia, what it was like learning about ALS and Parkinson’s disease for her role, and how she has been using 2020 to reflect on her career so far.  Hello Ashleigh!… Read more »

Spooky season is officially upon us and with it come some chilling new shows to add to your seasonal watchlists. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead or its spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, the newest addition to the TWD universe, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, puts a new, even gruesomer spin on the already familiar franchise.  Set a decade after the onslaught of the zombie apocalypse, the story centres around four teenagers as they come of age in this harrowing new world. Bringing the grisly story to life are some bright, young stars. 17-year old Nicolas Cantu is one of them.  It was clear from an early age that the Texas native had a knack for acting but Cantu has his hands in many pots. Before he was killing zombies on camera for a living, he was lending his voice to some beloved animated characters like Gumball in The Amazing World of Gumball. He happens to be somewhat of an animator himself, creating his own visuals for his YouTube channel that boasts almost half a million subscribers. Cantu is also an avid gamer and kind of a big deal in the Minecraft-verse.  You can catch him kicking some undead ass as Elton in The Walking… Read more »

Incorporating the respect and power brought about by strong human connection, the latest from the label celebrates good times and shared joy through a series of minimalist pieces, including vegan-leather shirts, oversized blazers, and more. Schön! spoke with the label about its latest collection and what its manifold works mean to them. Introduce us to AMITY. What does this collection represent to you? Amity is about the power of friendship. As with all our previous collections, we started from the emotions before the design. Amity is centred around esteem, affection, and respect. We focus a lot on unconditional support, immutable love, and positive energy, as those are the main values for the brand and our customers. You’ve described this as your most conscious collection to date. How does that take shape in the pieces we see in these photos? From the emotions, we came to design. Pieces feel like a second skin, are minimalistic, bold, and versatile. Of course, every item is gender-neutral; it acts as a canvas to your personality. What were some… Read more »

no one is innocent | collini milano ss21

Collini Milano returns to Schön! for its new SS21 collection. This series, entitled “No One Is Innocent”, is designed for the “new urban animal” — a figure that makes a statement while still being able to unite with those around it. As Collini describes in a press statement, the new collection seeks to “add beauty and gratification to everyday life.” To hear more about this mission, Schön! had another conversation with Carmine Rotondaro, CEO and creative director of Collini, to learn more about the collection. The collection is called “No One Is Innocent.” Why did you select this title, and what does it say about the pieces in the collection? “No One Is Innocent” comes from the idea that our collective experience has revealed a common destiny, a shared responsibility, a connected humanity. With the awareness that the simple pleasures of life are the most precious, we have developed a new priority: to add beauty and gratification to everyday life. With this collection, I want to contribute to this new mindset by providing the simple pleasure that derives from dressing in superb materials and fabrics, allowing the creation of a distinctive and personal identity to be savoured in solitude… Read more »

After a two-year hiatus, actress Fan Bingbing is making a global comeback in the star-studded spy film 355. Fan Bingbing has been the face of Louis Vuitton, Moët, Adidas and, most recently, Guerlain. A global fashion icon, she has graced red carpets in Marchesa, Ralph & Russo and Elie Saab gowns while adorned in Chopard jewels. Her porcelain skin, doe-like eyes and elegant features have made her China’s ideal beauty. This graceful public persona stands at a stark contrast to the characters she portrays, from modern working-class women who face complexities within city life in I Am Not Madame Bovary, Lost in Beijing and Buddha Mountain, to a supreme female leader in the Chinese period piece The Empress of China. “All of those films are about a woman’s growth and development,” Fan points out. “I place a lot of emphasis on how to discover that growth.” In the movies directed by prestigious filmmaker and close friend Li Yu, Fan appears fresh-faced with minimal make up, always managing to find a harmonious balance between a poor, struggling lead and a sympathetic voice that can speak to all audience members. “I love to challenge myself with roles in art films to… Read more »

ARC LUO | meet the designer

Taking inspiration from everything from Dadaism to mathematics, ARC LUO uses fashion to explore philosophy, history and so much more. The label’s most recent collection, “In-arti-culate”, focuses on the perception of art and how it shifts from person to person. These themes are not hidden; throughout much of the collection, imagery of toilets makes a prominent appearance — a bold move that shows the brand’s willingness to explore topics not often covered in the fashion world. Schön! spoke to label founder Qiuyi Luo about ARC LUO and its many designs.   You’ve said this collection is inspired by Duchamp. Besides the toilet cover-inspired pieces, how did Duchamp and “Fountain” influence this collection? What I like is that he challenged the concept of traditional art. Because in the fashion industry, we will also define what is popular this year, what is good taste, what is bad taste, what is commercial, what is creative, and which is the most popular colour now. What I want to say is that even the most indefinable carrier of art has been given various labels by people. Many ordinary people wonder why many costumes are not practical and look strange. Just like Duchamp, I… Read more »

Love them or hate them, Skins and Game of Thrones defined the last two decades. One offered swords, sorcery, and epic battles for a kingdom while the other had hedonistic teens and epic k-holes. You may be wondering what the two have in common. If you were a fan of both, you’ll know that the common denominator, besides the no-holds-barred sex and controversial finales, is actor Joe Dempsie.  If you watched Skins, you’ll remember him as the first generation’s sweet, pill-popping, and ill-fated Chris Miles. “Thronies” will know him as Gendry, the bastard blacksmith turned lord. The overnight success of Skins launched not only an era of house parties in the UK attempting to match the debauchery of those in the show, but also the illustrious careers of Dempsie and fellow Skins alumni including Nicolas Hoult, Kaya Scodelario, and Dev Patel. While Skins grew to become a seminal coming-of-age teen drama, Game of Thrones has come to define the fantasy genre. It seems Dempsie has a penchant for signing on to projects that are as groundbreaking as they are controversial, and his latest one is no exception. Channel 4’s new four-part drama Adult Material follows the story of a career woman, mother of three, and loyal partner, whose career happens to be as a… Read more »

Schön! presents | verité

Posted by & filed under video.

Verité is a study of friendship, sketching a relationship born from a city known for its transience, and the possibilities of chance in the creation of meaningful bonds. The title captures both technique and etymology: Verité references both the cinema verité aesthetic of the film, as well as the Latin word ‘veritas’, for truth. Shot over one day in Berlin across several districts, Farias follows two wandering protagonists without a clear destination. From moments of stasis to their dancing in a red-tinged tunnel and atop a roof at twilight, this portrait of intimacy is at once plotless yet cohesive. Each moment feels familiar, like vignettes from our own memory, yet there is no way of knowing the destiny of these two people. But perhaps this is the truth of friendship — something with less of a neat trajectory than an embodied feeling or imagination of what might be.   This Schön! online exclusive has been produced by direction.   Josephine Langford is ready for whatever’s coming next. After being introduced to Hollywood through 2017’s Wish Upon, her fame exploded following her role as Tessa in 2019’s After, a film based on the massively successful book series by Anna Todd. Now that its sequel After We Collided is hitting big and small screens around the world, Langford can take a moment to look back on making the two films — and have some fun on the side. “I set myself a goal for the first fifty days [of quarantine] to do a vlog for a few friends: reviewing mops, commenting on junk mail, that sort of thing,” she shares. “It was absolutely for my own entertainment and not theirs, despite the high-quality content.” When the After book series hit shelves, the novels and the world they created quickly developed a devoted fanbase. By joining its film adaptation, Langford was suddenly cast into this world, representing a character with whom many people had come to identify over the previous years. Being a part of this group has led to some interesting interactions with fans, she says. “I rarely get recognised but a girl came up to me when I was… Read more »

interview | latoya tonodeo

Nowadays, life itself can feel dystopian enough. If you want to escape reality and keep the angst on a fictional level, you can tune into Power Book II: Ghost instead. The spinoff to Starz’s hugely popular Power premiered in early September 2020 and has already been renewed for a second season. Newcomer LaToya Tonodeo plays Diana Tejada in the show, the daughter of Monet Tejada, a respected, ruthless and heavy-hitting drug business family brought to life by none other than Mary J. Blige.  Much like Power, the series is littered with shock-value, hierarchy, power, crime, and suspense. Even though the two series share similarities, Diana has nothing to do with Tonodeo’s previous. Even still, Tonodeo reminds us this is why she learned a lot from the new challenge. “Nothing great comes from being in your comfort zone,” she says. Ahead of the mid-season finale, Schön! caught up with Tonodeo to discuss all things Diana Tejada, power, relatability, and what’s next for her.  Previously, you had roles in Freeform’s The Fosters and also the Lionsgate film, The Perfect Match. Tell us about your characters in each of these and how, if at all, they have helped you grow as an actress today. What first attracted you to these roles? It’s funny… Read more »

the sirens cry | meet april ru wan + jessica pan

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Blending the influences of each of their unique histories, April Ru Wan and Jessica Pan come together to bring The Sirens Cry to Schön! — an imagined story of what a world post-climate change might look like. For this piece, Schön! spoke to both Wan and Pan about the design process, how this project came together, and what the two have planned for the future.  April, you spent your childhood in Vancouver and your teenage years in Shanghai. How do you think that history across two nations affects your work? I’m definitely inspired the easiest by my surroundings. I see my childhood in Vancouver reflected the most within my work ethic. There’s no denying that the west coast holds a gentler atmosphere compared to cities on the east. The way I choose to approach my work is quite similar to how Vancouver operates as a city. I typically go through countless forms of experimentation with focal points of the piece in a calm manner. Through my experience, the more time I give myself to observe the variations of approaches that I can bring to my projects, the easier the visual execution would be. I’ve been residing in Shanghai for the… Read more »

You might remember him as Ethan on Teen Wolf or Scott on The Leftovers, but one thing is sure: Charlie Carver continues to captivate us onscreen with every character and across a variety of genres. He also maintains his charm offscreen and continues to cultivate an appreciation of all the little things in life.  Amid this year’s challenges, Carver’s self-prescribed medicine has been a dose of nature. Of course, nature is a suitable remedy, but if you are in the market for a “deliciously fun and twisted” escape, right this way. Carver’s recent role is WWII veteran Huck in Netflix’s new psychological thriller Ratched. As the latest instalment by creator Ryan Murphy, the show dispenses all the horrors and heartbreaks found in a psychiatric institution while hinting at underlying darkness. Carver caught up with Schön! to reveal more details about the thriller, his time as Huck, and what is next for him. This has been a challenging year for most people. What is a challenge you have faced recently and how did you overcome it? Or, how are you working towards overcoming it?  I’ve been too addicted to the news. I don’t know if that’s what you were going for, but really, it’s… Read more »

interview | paul rabil

Paul Rabil is taking lacrosse global. A two-time NCAA champion and winner of numerous awards across the lacrosse world, Rabil is set on shifting the traditionally American pastime into the next big global sports phenomenon. It’s undoubtedly a daunting task, but if anyone can manage it, it’s Rabil — and he’ll do it in style. Through his work both on and off the field, Rabil picked up a love of Levi’s, a brand he still proudly represents to this day. “I’ve been wearing Levi’s my entire professional career, as both an athlete and an entrepreneur. I need to feel comfortable after my workouts while still looking presentable in board meetings,” he explains. “What is most important to me is that I wear a brand that represents and stands for inclusion and equality. Levi’s embodies just that. There has never been a more important year for us to reflect, stand up, and take action across our communities, and Levi’s makes it clear where they stand. They have encouraged their audiences to continue to raise their voices, and for me, I feel immensely proud to wear their jeans.”   With his obvious mastery of the game, it’s easy to forget that… Read more »

interview | eliza legzdina

Posted by & filed under culture.

Like the blazing phoenix of femininity rising from the ashes of an old patriarchal world, Eliza Legzdina boldly exploded onto the scene with her debut EP Iron Curtain Golden Pussy. Taking inspiration from an eclectic variety of musical influences, she is undoubtedly a talent to keep on your radar. We spoke to the multi-talented vocalist, poet, and DJ from Latvia about her post-Soviet beginnings, political activism, and creative influences. The breadth of Eliza’s various cultural influences is bound together by her Latvian roots. She playfully calls herself “a little Latvian pagan princess” as she fondly recalls her musical beginnings in the small city of Ogre. Here, she began performing at age three in the old Soviet culture house where her grandmother would take her for practice every evening. Through sun, rain, and the unforgiving Baltic winters, she was introduced to the world of creative arts, assisted by the loving support of her family who encouraged her to express herself creatively. “I’ve been working on music my entire life,” she says. Growing up in the aftermath of Soviet occupation, Eliza developed a keen understanding of how oppressive political structures are upheld by the perpetuation of the patriarchal domination of feminised bodies. “The ‘Iron Curtain’… Read more »

Creating rigid pieces with a gentle touch, BING’s work tells a story of softness. Starting her journey as a pattern maker, BING since shifted her focus to her interpretation of soft sculpture, blending the influence of her father’s history as a wood sculptor with her own personal interest and history as an artist and fashion designer.  In honour of her family and her Chinese roots, BING presents her latest series of works — an exploration of hard and soft representing the duality of an imagined group of people she refers to as the “Ladies”. To do this, BING created a foundation of eight large pieces of horsehair canvas that she then layered and draped on models’ bodies. The textile supporting this is jersey, a soft fabric with considerable strength. BING elaborated on these themes in our exclusive interview. What motivated you to move from just designing to starting your label, BING? After graduating from FIT’s Master’s in Fine Arts program, I started off my career in fashion at a luxury brand’s apparel department. During my time of observing and learning there, I was fortunate enough to find my path and my target audience while exploring the connection between fashion and… Read more »
