FLAMENCA is daring to re-imagine the Andalusian tradition of flamenco through a modern and electronic lens. Innovation is at the heart of all art, and following its Montreux Jazz Festival premiere in Switzlerand, FLAMENCA brought its fire and passion to World Club Dome in Frankfurt from 6 – 8 September. The techno festival has been popularly dubbed as ‘the world’s largest club,’ featuring over 200 DJs from Black Coffee to Honey Dijon. FLAMENCA brought some Spanish flare to the event with its entourage of flamenco dancers and selection of DJs playing sun-tinged house and electronic music. Swiss-Spanish FLAMENCA creator Esteban Garcia played his own set during the show, bringing both drama and storytelling to the live performance space.
The immersive live music event features some of the top flamenco dancers in Spain re-interpreting a corrida through dance, which translates to bull fight in English. The show follows four acts, several costume changes and incredible set design that features theatrical lighting and visuals unlike what you’d usually find at a festival. The creativity of the stage performance merges into the audience as dancers and performers on stilts interact with the crowd, inviting them to partake in a taste of Spanish culture for the evening. The entire event is a family affair with the creator’s family supporting in the crowd and even playing music during the night. At the very heart of FLAMENCA is an openness to experimentation and making you rethink what you thought the genre could be.
