From Soundcloud beats to full works of art, the transformation of Tommy Genesis has taken a full two years, but the wait has been well worth it. “I’m kind of moving towards something that I care more about because I put more thought into it. So now I’ll make a song and I’ll rewrite it like 20 times,” she explains, with excitement in her eyes. “I’m more concerned with the final product. I really don’t care how long it takes. I just want to make the best version of this song.”
The album sees Genesis moving to her new label Downtown Records/Interscope Records, but she’s clearly taking the reins when it comes to where both her look and sound are headed. “I made music where I was in control,” she states. “I directed it, I edited the footage and I had final say on everything. Nobody told me to do it. It’s the same way when I make my music. Sometimes I say certain things that are crazy, but nobody told me to say that. It’s just how I felt.”
This time around, Genesis is emerging from her secretive shell and writing about things that really matter to her. “I write such intimate music that it’s like if you really want to get to know me, you can listen to my songs. I put a lot there that I don’t share with anyone but my mom.”
Taking inspiration from her new production team, her move away from the self-proclaimed ‘fetish rapper’ tag was an easy one. “I only said it because it felt like everyone just wanted to talk about my sexuality,” she admits. “They wanted to put the music I was making into this very bubblegum, sex talk kind of genre that I didn’t relate to because I come from a background where I didn’t listen to rap music. I only rap because it just came naturally to me.”
