He might have closed the door on a major moment in his career with IT Chapter 2, but the future looks decidedly bright for young actor Jaeden Martell, who will be playing Jacob Thrombey in the upcoming detective mystery, Knives Out.
Martell describes Jacob as “pretty unlikable. He is an alt-right teenager whose life revolves around a screen. He is definitely not trustworthy, but to be honest, none of the Thrombey family members are.” When the patriarch (Christopher Plummer) of the rich and eccentric Thrombey clan dies under murky circumstances, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) attempts to uncover foul play.
On the surface, the film looks like a classic whodunnit, but director Rian Johnsson (The Last Jedi, Brick, Looper) offers a contemporary take on the genre. “Knives Out is definitely an ode to Agatha Christie mysteries,” says Martell, “but with current social and political topics. It has deep messages about privilege and immigration which makes it unique and very modern.”
“It was an honour working with Rian,” Martell continues. “I loved picking his brain about film cameras, Looper and movies in general. He is a very kind person and a talented filmmaker. He created a warm and fun atmosphere on set, which created a lot of chemistry between the cast.” After films like St. Vincent, Midnight Special and Aloha, Martell has plenty of experience of working with stellar casts. The line up from Knives Out is no less impressive: Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson… the list goes on.
