Schön! 48 | summer walker

With her forthcoming release ‘Finally Over It’, R&B sensation Summer Walker is closing the book on her acclaimed album trilogy. With a desire to shift directions, Walker reflects on her journey for her Schön! 48. Her breakout 2019 album ‘Over It’, featuring artists like Drake and Usher, went triple platinum and solidified her status as a leading voice in modern R&B. That was followed by ‘Still Over It’ in 2021. Now, at 29, she confirms that Finally Over It will be the final installment. “I think this will definitely be the end of the trilogy. I’m done with it,” she says. “In my mind, ‘Over It’ has always been meant to be a trilogy. I’ve been really drawn to the idea of exploring themes from old Hollywood, the amazing women of that time and their style. But honestly, I needed some time to grow into that kind of woman myself so it feels authentic. I feel like with this era, I can now bring my vision to life.”

Though she’s uncertain what her next sound will be, the Atlanta-born artist is ready to expand beyond R&B and reshape how her music reflects her. “I can talk about whatever I want, and I don’t have to be so stuck on love stuff and being heartbroken. I feel like that’s what everybody is expecting from the art and I’m really over singing about that,” she explains. “I think it goes too far when people start to pray that you get your heart broken or that you end up in a bad situation just so that they can get good music. So, I’m ready to do something else.”

While her rise to stardom came through emotional honesty, nostalgic nods to the ’90s, and lyrics many relate to, Walker emphasizes that her songs aren’t a direct reflection of her real life. “Time flew by since my last album and it wasn’t intentional for the wait, I just wanted to be clear on what I wanted to say and not rush out music just to rush,” she admits. “I care about the quality of my music both lyrically and sonically, and the crazy thing about it I know my fans do too. I just wish they understood how much time it takes to deliver on that quality.

Her latest single, ‘Spend It,’ highlights this contrast. “What I’m singing about is transactional stuff and that’s not how I really live my life. I’m more of a lover girl. It’s just art,” she clarifies. Fans eager to hear her new material can catch her live at London’s Wireless Festival in July, where she’ll join headliner Drake as a special guest. Reflecting on her emotional 2022 set — where she teared up during ‘Session 32’ as the audience sang every lyric — Walker praises U.K. audiences: “They’re open and accepting and kind. It’s been the best crowd to perform to.”
