American actor Gavin Leatherwood is no stranger to the horror genre. The actor, who wears Sandro for his Schön! 47 digital cover, is remembered as the beloved warlock Nicholas Scratch in the Netflix drama series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Now, 30-year-old Leatherwood speaks proudly of his latest role as Dennis in the highly anticipated Netflix film It’s What’s Inside  “Not that I would wish existential crisis on anyone,” he laughs, “but that is a driving force of this movie.” Leatherwood gives Schön! the inside scoop on his experience in the film, why nobody (figuratively and literally) is safe in it, and why its release is timely within our social media-obsessed society.

Waiting for the arrival of It’s What’s Inside has left Leatherwood feeling both anticipation and “delayed gratification”, given that it was filmed back in 2022. Recalling the inception of the project, he shares, “When the director reached out and I looked at the pitch deck, I thought it was very f*cking cool.” Despite undergoing multiple readings because of the confusion felt by the characters, Leatherwood was attracted to the project.

As we continue to discuss the movie, Leatherwood continues to turn it inside out. Not only does each character in the film (including Dennis) intentionally and “archetypically capture people that [we] might see of our generation” (e.g. the influencer), but the fictional world’s layers seemingly mirror our society’s obsession with what’s on the outside.

Of course, that is the perfect segue into our detailed discussion of what’s likely fuelled that obsession: social media. “It was a different world when we were kids,” says Leatherwood. “I don’t think we quite understand the implications of social media yet. It has accelerated at such a rate that I don’t think we’ve wrapped our heads around what it’s doing to us on a psychological level.”

Leatherwood is simultaneously profound and humble. “I’m so honoured to be part of this project,” he declares. “It is pretty d*mn special.” At that, while we are prepped to value and prioritise what’s inside, we can’t help but anticipate this film’s pending prominence now that it is finally out.
