Day three of the Panerai British Classic Week 2013 was held in Cowes last week, where the second and third races of the regatta series, as well as the Ladies Race, were held in sunny and breezy weather.
Strong ebb tides kept the navigators and tacticians busy with challenging running conditions, causing several boats to not finish the second race in time. After a quick delay the race continued with round three without any troubles. The Ladies race was a close call between the 13 competitors due to light patches and additional tide conditions.
Much was to celebrate on day three of the races. With an Open Yachts Pontoon Party and also taking place ashore during the competition was a party to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of a 40 footer titled St David’s Light, owned by the British Classic Yacht Club’s Rear Commodore, David Orton.
In order to provide a program for yacht owners and fans, the British Classic Yacht Club was formed in 2001. Affiliated to the RYA, the BCYC has more than eighty boats participating in its membership. Not only is the Club’s annual regatta held each July in Cowes, but the Club also provides other yacht related activities in the Solent and on the East Coast, while supporting the East Coast Classic Regatta as well.
The Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge is sponsored by Officine Panerai, founded in 1860 in Florence, the luxury brand began as a watch shop progressing into a prestigious school of watch-making. Officine Panerai has a deep history with the seas, acting as a supplier to the Italian Navy during that time, and up until 1997 the designs developed by Panerai were actually covered by the Military Secrets Act. Fast forward to 2013 and Panerai watches are available internationally, boasting exquisite Italian design and Swiss expertise, they are now sold worldwide through selected distributors and Panerai boutiques.
