Rupi Kaur took over the poetry world at just 21 years old when she self-published her first collection, Milk and Honey. It’s been ten years since its release and, when chatting with the glistening Kaur who wears Pandora and Rue Sophie for her Schön! 47 digital cover story, it’s clear that much has changed for the poet. “It feels so much bigger than me, because it’s meant so much to so many people,” Kaur says smiling. “It’s a book that’s changed my life.”

The poetry book — a compilation of poems and unassuming line drawings — would redefine the world of poetry. So much so that Milk and Honey‘s impact on culture is still felt today and now, a decade later, Kaur has released an anniversary edition and is conducting a world book signing tour. “When I wrote it, I was trying to overcome so many challenges,” Kaur recalls. “I know that’s why my readers connect with it; they were going through those same challenges.” Working on the updated edition required Kaur to re-read her book cover to cover. “Reading it back from my 31-year-old perspective…” She pauses, searching for the words and shaking her head. “I’m in awe, because I really didn’t realise this [book] would end up in so many different hands. If I did, I don’t think I could have been that honest.”

Fourteen years later, and the stage is still where Kaur feels most alive. “When I am on stage, I get to be the woman of my dreams,” she enthuses. Kaur has sold out three world tours. “There’s a dance I do with the audience,” she explains, highlighting the essential role her spectators have. Anticipate back-and-forth commentary and perhaps hecklers (the nice kind), where the most energetic are invited up on stage to take the mic or share their stories. “We create magic,” she beams.
