Alycia Debnam-Carey ’s dedication to her craft has brought her face-to-face with the underbelly of humanity. We’ve seen her hands deep in mud and guts for the dystopian thrillers The 100 and Fear the Walking Dead . Although many viewers were devastated when Debnam-Carey, who is adorned in Cartier and Vex Clothing for her Schön! 44 digital cover, departed from Fear the Walking Dead , fans can catch her in two shows this year: Saint X and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart .
As a shapeshifter, Debnam-Carey is always looking for creative projects that showcase different sides of her as an actress. One of those projects is Hulu’s psychological drama Saint X , based on Alexis Schaitkin’s hypnotic novel. It’s a “powerful psychological portrait of how loss can send people into downward spirals,” says the actress. The story also casts the girl-gone-missing genre against a backdrop of race and privilege: “We often see a media circus focused on the missing white girl. People then overlook how local communities are affected by political and racial undertones. This sad reality remains largely untold, and that’s why the script piqued my interest.”
Travelling to her native Australia in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart , another tale of loss and betrayal that shines a light on domestic abuse and the beauty of women supporting one another. Debnam-Carey was enchanted as soon as she picked up the book. “My heart of hearts said this role must be yours,” she recalls. “I know that sounds beyond arrogant and self-absorbed, but it was my gut reaction. So, I fought tooth and nail for the job.”
Saint X is streaming on Hulu now.
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart will stream on Amazon Prime Video in August.
