Louis XIII Rare Cask Sold for Charity/
A charity auction selling a rare cask to help children suffering from life-threatening heart diseases, raised over £50,000 in Central London yesterday. On Wednesday May 22, 50 guests took part in an auction at Dartmouth House in Mayfair to support the charity ‘Chain of Hope.’
The main subject of the gathering was a Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6, which is named after its 42.6 % alcohol content. A luxurious beverage, which has a note of gingerbread, ginger and tobacco leaf. There is a limited edition of only 738 decanters available worldwide, they will be commercially available at Harrods and Hedonism Wines from June for RRP £20,000.
Lord Jeffrey Archer held the auction that aimed to made the public aware of the charity Chain of Hope. It provides corrective surgery for children with heart diseases, and the kind of treatment that they would otherwise not have access to, as well as forming volunteer teams to expand to developing countries like Mozambique, Uganda or Ethiopia.

DRESSING ‘THE GREAT GATSBY’

From the Brooks Brothers limited collection inspired by The Great Gatsby
ON THE DAY OF ITS CINEMA RELEASE, SCHÖN! EXPLORES THE COSTUMES OF THIS YEAR’S MOST HIGHLY AWAITED FILM, ‘THE GREAT GATSBY’.
A film adaptation of one of the greatest American novels of the 20th Century is always going to come under close scrutiny and, with delays to its release date, Baz Luhrmann’s long awaited interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ is certainly no exception. Added pressure comes courtesy of a cinema classic: the 1974 version written by Francis Ford Coppola and starring screen icons Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern. This time around, the leading roles are reprised by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, whose costumes are as highly anticipated as their performances.
‘The Great Gatsby’ is arguably THE seminal representation of the roaring twenties and the jazz age; its characters drawn from the young, beautiful and rich of Long Island. The 1974 version, with costumes by Ralph Lauren, has inspired countless catwalk collections and with flapper dresses and deco details sashaying down the runways of Gucci, Etro etc. these past few months, Luhrmann’s offering looks set to achieve similar sartorial success. This success can largely be credited to his wife and long-term collaborator, the multi Academy Award and BAFTA winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin.

Right/ Orange organza dress inspired by the Prada Fall/Winter 2011 collection.
Once again, fashion brands have played a major role in the creation of the costumes for Fitzgerald’s characters and Martin has chosen them carefully. She decided to collaborate with Miuccia Prada on the sumptuous clothing of the female characters, and together they created a bespoke collection of over 40 unique Miu Miu and Prada cocktail and evening dresses, inspired by runway looks from the last 20 years. “Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past,” explains Martin. “This connection is central to our relationship with Miuccia Prada on ‘The Great Gatsby’, and has connected our vision with hers…We have tried to create an environment that the audience will be subconsciously familiar with, yet separated from.”

From The Great Gatsby Collection by Tiffany & Co.
A specially designed collection of platinum-set diamond and pearl jewellery from Tiffany & Co perfectly complements the period clothes. As America’s first great jeweller, Tiffany & Co symbolised the glitz and glamour of this golden age and, according to Martin, “seemed the perfect fit for ‘The Great Gatsby’ not only because F. Scott Fitzgerald himself was a customer but also because Louis Comfort Tiffany, the brand’s first Design Director, mixed in the actual Long Island circles described in the novel.” Tiffany & Co even supplied the china, silver and other accessories that adorn the interior of Jay Gatsby’s mansion in the film.
To accompany the cinema release and to celebrate its 175th anniversary, Tiffany & Co will release the Ziegfeld collection in June. Based on the brand’s art deco designs from the 1920s and the daisy motif that is integral to the movie, it includes pieces in sterling silver, black onyx and, of course, ropes of luxurious pearls – a signature of 1920s fashion. The gentlemen have not been forgotten, with black enamel cufflinks and a black onyx signet ring to complete the collection.
Meanwhile, Brooks Brothers has produced more than 500 ensembles for the male characters in the film based on Martin’s designs, many of which were inspired by 1920s items from the brand’s archives. Established in New York in 1818, Brooks Brothers is America’s oldest ready-to-wear retailer and, as Martin points out, is “mentioned numerous times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction. It is this most basic and fundamental connection that has made our collaboration so authentic.”
Brooks Brothers has just released a limited edition collection for Spring/Summer based on Martin’s costume designs, including a version of the pink linen suit worn by DiCaprio – a symbol in Fitzgerald’s novel of all that remains naïve and fresh about Gatsby despite his wealth and opulent lifestyle – with the addition of subtle pinstripes. The collection also features bow ties produced using archival fabrics, bowler hats, regatta blazers and even a beech wood walking stick based on the one Gatsby carries in the film.
So ladies and gentlemen, don’t forget that Gatsby style is not reserved for the big screen. Whether it’s pearls or pinstripes, Prada or preppy, this is your chance to grab a piece of costume history for yourselves.
The Great Gatsby is released by Warner Brothers on 16th May 2013. For more information, visit thegreatgatsbymovie.com

Photographer Nevio Vitali collaborates with stylist Luca Termine and model Martin Conte to present this shoot entitled “In the Name of.” Conte dons clothes from Burberry, Costume National, and Maison Martin Margiela to become the tall, dark and handsome figure of these stunning black-and-white photographs. The religious imagery that permeates through this shoot, such as the Jesus captured in the Mykita sunglasses, the bible clutched in Conte’s hands, or the prayer stance adopted by Conte in one of the photographs, reminds us that even the garb of a preacher can be stylish.

Fabergé Egg Miles/

Fabergé Egg Pendant available on board of VistaJet
This Easter, only the most exquisite of eggs will do, as master jeweller Fabergé, luxury aviation company VistaJet and Turner Prize nominee Ian Davenport team up to create Egg Miles.
Celebrating both Spring and Easter, this special project sees Fabergé and VistaJet commission abstract painter Ian Davenport to produce an exclusive design which now adorns the tail of one of the aviation giant’s flagship aircrafts – the Bombardier Global 6000.
Encompassing Fabergé’s rich heritage yet with a thoroughly modern aesthetic, contemporary artist Ian Davenport’s design plays homage to the guilloché enamel patterns of the infamous Russian jeweller’s Imperial Easter Eggs. Taking the ovum-shape and decorating it with a burst of rainbow hues, Davenport worked with Fabergé’s Creative and Managing Director Katharina Flohr to encapsulate the thoroughly fresh Fabergé of today.

Fabergé Egg Pendant
Just as Peter Carl Fabergé created extraordinary designs for the Tsars, nobility and globetrotters throughout the 1800s, today’s Fabergé is doing just that, but this time for the travellers of VistaJet. Available exclusively in-flight to its customers, VistaJet will offer a collection of Fabergé’s beautiful egg-shaped pendants in gold, coloured gemstones and enamel, to be viewed in the relaxing surroundings of the cabin.
“When I was contacted by Fabergé about the project I was excited to be working with a company of such reputation and heritage,” explains Davenport. “There were numerous challenges to overcome especially considering the scale and shape of the aircraft and how this might relate to the artwork. The VistaJet Global 6000’s tail had to incorporate my own artistic vision and Fabergé’s identity whilst still being a unique strong design in its own right” – something the British artist has in no doubt succeeded with.

JACK OF ALL TRADES, MASTER OF ALL/
Wendy Bevan is a woman of many talents; her multi-disciplinary approach to her work sees her boasting a CV that would make your average East London creative cry tears of jealousy into their stylish beards. However, although primarily known as a photographer, Bevan also puts her talents to use through music and as a performance artist.
This April Wendy allows a peek into her intriguing world, with an exhibition showcasing her photographic work from over a span of 10 years, and two performances at the SPILL Festival alongside her band Temper Temper.
By choosing to work exclusively with Polaroid cameras, Bevan manages to create a surreal world within her images, inviting viewers to challenge ideals of feminine beauty. Now with her new exhibition – titled Inventory: 10 Polaroid Years – you’ll finally get the chance to take home a piece of the bewitching art.
After going through an archive of thousands of images, Bevan has chosen 200 to be featured at The Cob Gallery in Camden as a pop up show from 11th -14th April 2013. The nostalgic feel of her photographs are further enhanced through her inclusion of personal works and unpublished photographs.
However if you cannot wait until 11th April 2013 to see the work of the polaroid extraordinaire, then head over to the Spill Festival where you can catch Bevan in action with her hauntingly good band; Temper Temper. Comprised of four talented musicians – and fronted by her alter ego – Bevan sings of romance and devastation in true femme fatale form, appearing to provide a fitting soundtrack to her photographic works.
The Spill festival occurs every two years and takes place at a range of venues across London, including the Barbican, National Theatre Studio, Soho Theatre, Toynbee Studios and the Whitechapel Gallery, providing a coming together of like minds to revel in experimental theatre, live art and music performances.
Temper Temper takes to the stage at Toynbee Studios on the 5th and 6th of April 2013, but the fun doesn’t have to begin and end there, as the festival will run from the 3rd-14th April 2013. It’s set to be a one of a kind experience!

FIGHTING UNIFORMITY WITH FASHION/

Doing Fashion Graduate Show 2013, Basel
Photography / Shoji Fujii
“Fight mindless uniformity by doing deeply committed fashion.” Such is the motto for the Institute for Fashion Design Basel and the Academy of Art and Design in Switzerland, which encourages its students to question the conventional practices of fashion. To embrace this motto, on 23rd March, the school staged the fashion show ‘Doing Fashion’ in tandem with the release of a book showcasing its most talented and promising students.
This, the third annual show, featured twelve graduating students, who were asked to consider the question, “Am I doing fashion or just putting fabrics together?” The 1,200 guests comprised of current students, former students and faculty, but also designers, photographers, fashion connoisseurs and international press. Here at Schön!, we picked out three students we believe could be attracting even greater attention in the future.
Jasmine Einsele – unlike many women in the fashion industry – decided to undertake menswear in an attempt to make unique what is often the same time after time. Athough Einsele’s collection comprises of suits and trousers, subtle variations, such as asymmetric cuts, add unique interest to each look.

Israel Mariano «BOTTOM LESS by Israel Mariano – Men’s no season!»
Photography / Shoji Fujii
Israel Mariano’s menswear also caught our eye by adding a twist to old favourites. His collection features chic hats in numerous colours, a sexy trench coat and a jacket and shrug that look as if they were weaved together like a picnic basket. Vintage style is paired with white sunglasses and fedoras, combining gangster and hippie looks of yesteryear. What stands out most is the superior craftsmanship of this impeccably put-together collection.
The show also presented the first public unveiling of Nadine Burkhardt’s work. Burkhardt uses box-like structures to beautifully frame her models and says she designs womenswear so that, “The hanging of the dress lies on the shoulders and falls through natural gravity in exactly the form determined by me.” The models were also wearing elegant gloves and shoes that featured heels formed of little balls. Burkhardt has already interned for Henrik Vibskov and has been invited to work for Maja Brix when she returns to Copenhagen after graduating.
In the future, Burkhardt hopes to connect, “…the creating of fashion with art and music or an extra environmental dimension.” It’s a fitting remark for a student from the school where, “Doing Fashion means to be involved with a human-centred approach to fashion and to participate responsibly in shaping the present and future.” Watch out for these three young talents. Who knows, they may well be shaping the future of fashion.
