Hanbok directly translates to “Korean clothing”. It is a garb that is steeped in history – originating centuries ago, with visual depictions dating as far back as the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Today, the hanbok, worn by Koreans around the world, has become synonymous with traditional ceremonies and formal events.
The Hanbok Wave Project seeks to turn all of this on its head, however. A group of 10 Korean designers have been brought together to take the classic garment and breathe a decidedly new and contemporary life into it. The stunning looks were showcased at the Korean Cultural centre in London at an event hosted by The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Craft and Design Foundation.
Yuna Kim, a former Olympic figure skater served as the muse for the collection. Her image serving as inspiration for the looks that were presented at the show. Beyond merely inspiring the designers though, Yuna Kim also participated in the design and development process.
The collection was a gorgeous amalgamation of history and culture; of the nouveau and the original. Models posed wearing tailored jackets over flowy skirts, jegoris of lilac falling open over structured tops and short skirts, chunky boots and sneakers worn with nearly every outfit. The Hanbok Wave show gave a wink and a nod at tradition before letting the tides of modern fashion sweep you off your feet.
The event follows the widespread proliferation of hallyu, or “The Korean Wave”. People the world over are beginning to take a new appreciation for Korean pop culture at large. From BTS to Bong Joon Ho, to Squid Game, Korean pop culture has piqued the intense interest of populations around the world. We’ve rendered McLuhan’s global village a reality and it is full of gauzy gowns. Globalization is not without cons, but the pros are decidedly beautiful.
“Hanbok and Hallyu are listed in the Oxford Dictionary!” said a representative of The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. “Interest in Korean hanbok is increasing abroad. We’re looking forward to global audiences discovering the charm of Hanbok and designers in the Hanbok field expanding throughout the world.”
Photos of Yuna Kim in the designs are slated to be featured in a spread in Marie Claire France. The editorial feature will highlight the unique cultural charm and subtlety that the hanbok embodies.
Later this year, Hanbok Wave’s pictorial video will be shown on a billboard on Broadway in Times Square, New York. Video captured at this fashion event will be shown on V&A’s Hallyu! The Korean Wave Social Channel so that anyone who wishes to experience this modern retelling of tradition can do so.
