BAYLI has all the makings of an it girl. In an era where women are dominating the world of music, she has mastered her signature sound of  techno-infused hyper pop. The only acceptable way to listen to BAYLI (and the playlist she Curated for Schön!) is with speakers at full volume. The Brooklyn artist’s club kid energy is refreshing and reflects her diverse musical references, whether that be the rich sounds of London or her roots in punk band The Skins. Mentored by legend Rick Rubin, Bayli’s alt sound is already building a fanbase within New York’s queer club scene. With the release of her latest single ‘fem-onomics’ and a new EP on the way, the standout artist spoke to Schön! about growing up in Brooklyn’s music scene, maximalism and shared a playlist of her personal favourites.

Hey BAYLI, what are you up to right now?

Sitting on my couch in New York answering your cheeky little questions.

What was the music scene like growing up?

Growing up in Brooklyn, the music scene felt like one big, amazing mixtape. By my teens, it was this beautiful chaos of genres. We were bouncing between Beach Fossils shows in DIY spaces and then started sneaking into A$AP Mob gigs. Grizzly Bear, Santigold, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Blood Orange — genre lines were blurry and that felt really freeing. I was so damn lucky to be in an Indie Rock band back then so I got to live inside it all: loud basements, rooftops, all of that.

What artists did you grow up hearing that helped shape the kind of music you make today?

Where do I start? I grew up singing in classic Rock bands — think Zeppelin, Hendrix, Stones — and listening to lots of ‘60s and ‘70s soul, too. My mama was British and she introduced me to Ska, Punk, and those deep London sounds early on. NYC just threw gasoline on the fire. Now my sound is this melting pot of glam, distortion  and everything spice.

Your personal taste is eclectic. Is there anything on your playlist that may surprise people?

Maybe the Brian Eno song? Or the random ‘The Smile’ song I threw in for you girlies. Honestly, my whole existence is still so surprising [and] confusing to people. I contain multitudes, you’re welcome.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it before?

A minimalist doing maximalism.

Who are some of your style references when it comes to putting an outfit together?

Cher if she moved to Brooklyn, Rihanna, the Black Jane Birkin, Tina, Diana, Grace, Madonna in her lesbian era, NYC femmes.

Pop music is having a bit of a revival at the moment. What do you think is the key to a great pop

song?

Your concept. A good concept should feel like a wink, a slap, and a hug all at once.

Rick Rubin is one of your mentors. What is one invaluable thing you have learned from him?

He never directly said it but to protect the process. Rick taught me that making art is sacred, and that if you honour the process, the product will honour you back.
