Canadian singer Avenoir has a story to tell and his method of delivery is straight to the heart through song. In an era of repackaged nostalgia it has become increasingly rare to hear music that tows the lines of familiar and novel, yet Avenoir manages to do just that with his tender and pensive R&B sound. His delicate vocals ebb and flow over production that shines in its intricate simplicity. Although the emerging artist is just at the beginning of his career, having just released his debut album ‘Mirage’, he has already carved out a distinct sonic universe that transports listeners to a uniquely Avenoir frequency. Schön! got to know about the mind behind the music with a Curated playlist.

Hey Avenoir, what are you up to right now?

Reading The Sense of Style’ by Steven Pinker.

How did you first get into making your own music?

Making songs on piano. I didn’t write songs then but my emotions would speak through the melody.

Why do you think you were drawn to the alternative R&B sound in particular?

I naturally fell into it because of the artists I was listening to but it felt like the only genre honest enough for my contradictions.

How would you describe your sound to someone who is just discovering you?

It’s honest music. YMX, my producer, and I also try to create a memorable experience and not limit ourselves to a genre. I lay down whatever sounds the best to me.

You’ve just released your first album. What does it say about this era of your life?

The album for me signifies the amount of changes that I’m forced to encounter throughout my 20’s. ‘Mirage’ is about accepting life for what it is, finding clarity within all the chaos.

In the process of creating it, what have you learned about yourself and your craft?

I learned that when writing I’m at my best trusting my gut, but also when I’m patient enough to wait and come back to a song later with a clear mind.

Is there a song you feel most sentimental about?

Definitely ‘When You Need Me.’ It’s about undying, unconditional, everlasting love. That feeling crossed my heart during a very pivotal time for me and that song was born out of it so I hold it very close.

What are you looking forward to in the year to come?

For the world to acknowledge and enjoy my art.

Avenoir‘s debut album ‘Mirage‘ is out now.
