Power comes in many forms and, for Jacob Batalon ,Polo Ralph Lauren for his Schön! 46 digital cover story, he chats about embracing individuality, defying expectations and witnessing the supernatural. Although he’s known by the masses as the goofy and lovable Ned in Spider-Man , he’s been deftly crafting a varied and vast filmography. It’s the titular role of Reginald the Vampire – Syfy’s series based on the popular Fat Vampire books – that has brought new depth to his career.
“The vampire theme is just a backdrop of a human story,” he explains. “In a way [it’s] our American society. In school, you see the popular kids and the jocks and the cool girls and whatnot. When you’re a kid, you sort of think that that’s how life goes.” Instead, Batalon implores us to “trust and believe in who you are and don’t try to change for anybody. Don’t think that you need to conform to some sort of stereotype in order to be cool and successful in life. What makes you cool and unique is your individuality and the things you like.”
Leaning into his own unique individuality brought him to Tarot , the supernatural film which sees a group of friends unleashing spirits by using a forbidden Tarot deck. Although the project is, again, very different from his previous work, the concepts of fate, superstitions, and beyond still have embed themselves into the way Batalon’s mind works. “A couple days before I got the call to be in Spider-Man: Homecoming , I read my horoscope. It said, ‘Your life is going to change in ways that the universe feels you’re ready for.’” Whether he’s fending off spirits in Tarot, sinking his teeth into another season of Reginald, or charming audiences in upcoming projects, one thing is certain: Jacob Batalon is a unique force with a hopeful message: “You have the ability to be your own hero.”
