Teresa Palmer is an open book. Renowned for her dynamic and authentic performances across the screen, Palmer chats with us for her Schön! 46digital cover story while wearing Versace and ALAÏA, diving into what it is about acting that makes her tick. “I’m always looking to go deeper and push myself beyond my comfort zone,” she says from her hometown of Adelaide, Australia. From rom-coms to psychological thrillers, Palmer’s versatility has earned her numerous awards and red-carpet appearances at the Toronto, Sundance, and Cannes film festivals. Her notable roles in films like I Am Number Four, Warm Bodies, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, A Discovery of Witches, and the Oscar-winning Hacksaw Ridge have garnered a loyal fanbase.
It’s in The Fall Guy where Palmer shows a new side to herself. The Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt-led film, which has already received critical acclaim, ended up being a project Palmer seemingly manifested overnight. It was a whirlwind!” she recalls about the rapid casting process and immediate flight from LA to Australia. Directed by David Leitch, the film is inspired by Glen A. Larson’s 1980s TV series, known for its humour and realistic depiction of stunt performers. “I play a funny actress who’s very full of herself,” Palmer explains, discussing her time on set with Ryan Gosling. They navigated Leitch’s largely unscripted scenes “by the seat of our pants!” As a good friend of Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, Palmer was thrilled to work with Gosling, who proved to be a supportive co-producer and colleague. “He was charming, warm-hearted, and my biggest cheerleader,” she reveals. “I told my husband that he’s the true definition of a movie star; someone who advises you while cheering you on from the sidelines.”
Outside of acting though is where Palmer finds other sources of fulfillment. Being a parent is another ‘role’ she talks at length about, discussing how she always strives to create a positive family dynamic for her five children with actor and screenwriter husband Mark Webber. She also co-hosts The Mother Daze podcast with fellow actress Sarah Wright Olsen. “My life is so much more adventurous and colorful thanks to the kids,” she says of her uniquely named brood: Bodhi Rain, Forest Sage, Poet Lake, Prairie Moon, and Isaac Love. “There are moments in this industry where you’re challenged, rejected, and feeling insecure. But being surrounded by my little crew is incredibly uplifting and inspiring. I couldn’t imagine doing my job without them!”
