From starring in Disney’s live action adaptation of the beloved children’s story The Little Mermaid to playing young Nettie Harris in the musical rendition of the coming-of-age period drama film The Color Purpl e, Halle Bailey is having her breakthrough moment. Gleaming and shining in Pandora for her Schön! 44 cover story, Bailey explores the watery depths of approaching both projects — a task that is equal parts daunting and thrilling.
“I was immensely overjoyed, shocked, surprised, but happy and grateful,” Bailey explains when asked about playing Ariel in the Disney classic. “This movie has meant the world to me for so long.” As art imitates life, Ariel’s story began to echo her own. The Georgia-native describes filming in London under travel restrictions and the coronavirus pandemic as an “isolating experience” that she channeled into her acting “to feel the way that [Ariel] did when she was under water longing for something more, this new world, this new home.”
The power of the Disney princess lies in what she represents, so it’s no surprise that Bailey’s role had a freeing influence on her. “She allowed me to come into myself more as a woman,” states Bailey. “Ariel taught me how strong and independent I can be and how much courage I have.”
