church’s ss26 | shanghai summer

There’s something fitting about Church’s choosing a theatre for its presentation because this season, the shoes do all the talking. For Spring/Summer 2026, Church’s returned to its theatrical roots — quite literally, one could say — presenting the collection inside Milan’s Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato, a circular, intimate venue once known as Teatro Fossati.

The heart of the collection lies in a name that Church’s followers will know well: Shanghai. First introduced in 1929, the Shanghai was a design that broke ranks thanks to its experimental mixing of codes (broguing, fringing, mixed materials). Almost a century later, it remains one of the house’s most recognisable silhouettes. This season, it returns in three new interpretations, each designed for lightness, modernity, and wearability in the warmer months.

The Shanghai Summer stays close to the original’s character but softened with Goodyear soft construction and a lightly padded leather sole. The result is a shoe that still commands attention, yet feels like something made for walking all day in the city heat.

Next is the Shanghai Laser which swaps the signature mix of leathers and textures for a clean whole-cut upper, cut from a single piece of premium leather using laser precision technology. Minimalist in look but packed with technique, it uses Blake soft construction to keep things flexible, offering a very modern twist to a classic form.

Finally, there’s the Shanghai Essence, a new family of loafers, lace-ups, and ankle boots based on the Shanghai Soft construction. Here, the codes are relaxed even further due to their deconstructed appearance, yet they remain lightweight and very nonchalantly British.

But the Shanghai isn’t the whole story. Act II of the collection is dubbed British Spring — a more casual chapter, full of suede moc toes, easy Derby styles, and smart-casual silhouettes. Everything here is crafted in the UK using Goodyear 2.0, Church’s updated take on its traditional construction method, designed to deliver extra comfort without losing structure.

Act III brings in the Crown collection — the most formal of the three, but still infused with subtle character. Church’s leans into rich seasonal tones: deep blue, forest green, burgundy, all dyed into natural white “crust” leather, which develops personality over time. The finish is classic, but never stiff.

Church’s made its point clearly: footwear can still be the main character. You just have to give it the right entrance.
