past II future | the mercedes-benz x moncler by nigo collaboration

Mercedes-Benz and Moncler made waves at “The City of Genius” show in Shanghai with their latest collaboration, featuring the creative genius of NIGO. Known for his distinctive style, NIGO has given the iconic G-Class a fresh yet nostalgic twist, blending 90s inspiration with contemporary design. The result is “Project G-Class Past II Future,” a one-of-a-kind art piece that reimagines the rugged 90s G-Class for a new era. It doesn’t stop there – this design also serves as the foundation for a limited run of 20 G-Class cars, set to launch in 2025.

The revival of the G-Class goes beyond a mere aesthetic makeover. With its classic black steel wheels, foldable windscreen, and gold-coloured fuel can, the vehicle carries the essence of its original character – in addition to an innovative sound system designed by G-Class enthusiast Devon Turnbull. But it’s the carefully modernised interior that truly tells the story. The seats are adorned with a chequered pattern, reminiscent of early G-Class models, while bold orange and gold accents tie the car to the accompanying fashion collection previewed at the show.

Speaking of fashion, NIGO also brought his flair to a new capsule collection, co-designed with Mercedes-Benz and Moncler. Taking cues from 90s street style, the collection features pieces like souvenir jackets, checked shirts, and denim that reflect the era’s influence while embracing contemporary trends. This collection, designed to be gender-neutral, is set to be released in April 2025, offering a fresh take on urban wear for today’s audience.

Bettina Fetzer, Vice President of Communications & Marketing at Mercedes-Benz, highlighted the essence of the collaboration: a fusion of past and present, with the G-Class emerging as a timeless symbol of both eras. For NIGO, the 90s provided a well of inspiration, an era that saw the rise of electronic music and urban culture, which he skilfully wove into the design of the “Past II Future” G-Class.

The Shanghai event wasn’t just about cars and fashion, though. Other standout collaborations were showcased, including work by A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith, and Donald Glover. However, the G-Class Past II Future and its accompanying fashion collection, with their nostalgic undertones and bold vision, stood out in a crowded lineup.
