Hayley Williams is in full bloom. Fresh from tour, the powerhouse Paramore singer is in a period of reflection. Dressed in Stine Goya for her Schön! 45 story, it’s clear that beyond her cosmic talent, Hayley’s humility might just be the key to her longevity and legendary status. “After the first time our band got on the radio or on MTV, I remember having a couple of conversations like, ‘We’re teenagers, but one day there are going to be people who don’t even exist yet that might hear a song.’ They might see this interview that we’re doing right now. How crazy would that be?” The Grammy-winner has just wrapped up Paramore’s This Is Why tour, where she floored fans with her outstanding vocals and quirky choreography. “We had people that were our age with their kids like, ‘I grew up on you and this is my kid’s first show.’ You might be able to dream about it, but I don’t know that I ever could have fully imagined that this would happen,” she admits.

Now in her 30s, she’s processing the impact of an adolescence under the spotlight. “While we’re being nostalgic about the alternative emo scene of the early aughts, people are starting to understand that we got some shit wrong. If you were specifically a young, alternative white boy in that scene, the experience was just different. It was very much a boy’s club,” she says. Williams mentions a book on the Y2K boom of the emo scene called Where Are Your Boys Tonight? Although she’s yet to read it, she tells us: “Our friend was like, ‘You’re kind of the only female voice in it,’ and that is very reflective of the times. I wasn’t really allowed to be a 16-year-old girl because our music scene was just so tough on females. I felt this pressure to work extra hard to make sure that I didn’t seem vulnerable, because the truth is that I was.”

Style is something that has evolved alongside Williams. She has always admired glamour and design, but shunned her sartorial curiosity in fear that an interest in fashion would be perceived as not “punk enough”. Today, she smiles at her duality. “When I came to do this photoshoot, I was so stoked to wear designers that I respect so much. If you told little me that I got to do that? It’s like, what a life!”
