interview | brianne tju
Brianne Tju has a lot on her plate right now. Fresh off the release of her film Three Months, Tju is remaining firmly in the spotlight thanks to the newly-released Blumhouse horror film Unhuman, a thrilling, undead journey about a group of students on a field trip gone awry. Add that to SXSW favourite The Cow and last year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and it quickly becomes clear that Tju is a name viewers can look forward to seeing for years to come. Schön! spoke with the actor about life, Unhuman, her other projects and everything else. Hey Brianne! So nice to meet you. How are you? What’s been keeping you busy these days? Hi! Thank you for having me! So lately I’ve been flying back and forth from LA to Calgary to shoot Tegan and Sara’s show High School. I’ve been knitting, watching Wong Kar-Wai films, and redecorating my place. I’ve also been trying to be diligent about caring for my mental health. Your new project, Unhuman, comes out today! Can you introduce our readers to the film and your character? So this is a fun one! I play Ever in Unhuman for Blumhouse. It’s directed by the… Read more »
interview | isaac powell
“I take inspiration from my fears.” Isaac Powell has been acting and singing since he was a child, which may be a contributing factor to why he is an absolute stand out on the shows he’s acted in (Modern Love and American Horror Story, to name a few). Not only is Powell a commander of the screen, but he’s also lit up several shows on Broadway and was even nominated for a Grammy just after graduating from university. Schön! caught up with him to talk about his latest projects and what he’s excited to do this upcoming year. Hi Isaac! How was your weekend? I had a fantastic weekend. Made some lovely memories. Could you tell us a little about how you got into acting and singing? I got into acting and singing through some girls my sister used to babysit. I’d hang out with them on summer breaks and they’d teach me songs and dances, and eventually [they] convinced me to audition for community theatre shows with them. I saw you studied at North Carolina School of the Arts. What was your first big acting experience after college? My first big acting job after graduating from UNCSA was a show called… Read more »
interview | olly
“Watching people’s minds become inquisitive, watching people react and respond to me when I walk into a room or on set, watching people navigate me, being a political statement before I even open my mouth. I love taking up space in a way that has nothing to do with me.” Olly Eley is a star like none other. In Schön’s interview with Olly, they talk about taking comfort in reaching out to their community over social media, how we can make the world safer for trans people, and being free by living completely by their own rules. Take notes — you just might just learn something. “I remember the day I discovered that I could connect with other Queer/Trans people across the globe in such a simple and visual way.” I’m quoting you from your Instagram because I find this to be really interesting. How do you think social media plays a part in your connection with others, and what do you think about this visual connection? Social media has played a huge part in keeping me alive! I know that sounds dramatic [laughs]. However, it has played such a huge role in keeping me connected with my community, mainly… Read more »
interview | david alvarez
“Love breaks boundaries; fear and hatred makes them.” David Alvarez seamlessly stitches sentence after sentence, using his intellect to make sense of our troubling world. He has a way of presenting his wonderfully dynamic reality — rooted partially in his army experience — whilst also conveying deep emotions as both a dancer and actor. Alvarez has had an intrinsic star quality since he was cast as Billy Elliot on Broadway and won a Tony award at only 15 years old. Today, he manages his own style to create a new rendition of West Side Story’s famed Bernardo, expanding the conversation on what these characters and films represent in our current times. We sit down with David to discuss his army experience, his background as a dancer and how love can break boundaries. Hi David! How is life these days? These days it’s about spending time with my family and close friends and preparing for the next project. Where were you when you heard you were cast as Bernardo, and how did you feel? I was at home, and it truly was a dream come true. I had wanted to be affiliated with West Side Story since I first saw it… Read more »
interview | adeline rudolph
It’s difficult to put into words what being a ‘natural’ on camera looks like, but when watching Adeline Rudolph enter a scene, the meaning of the phrase becomes instantly clear. Rudolph is known for starring as Agatha Night on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Minerva Marble on Riverdale. In these projects and others, Adeline dazzles, taking every scene she is in and running away with it. We had a chance to deep dive with her on all things Riverdale and Sabrina whilst getting to learn about the people and moments that inspire her most. First, we have to ask — did they let you keep the painted picture of you as an archer from this season of Riverdale? You know what, I didn’t even ask if I could keep it. But now that you’ve planted that idea in my head, I might have to see if there’s a way for me to keep it as a souvenir! You joined Riverdale in its fifth season after plenty of twists and turns — and even a time jump. How did you both catch up with the story and integrate yourself with the Riverdale cast and crew? What was cool about Minerva… Read more »
interview | crystal moselle
Through the stunning and immersive work of Crystal Moselle, we are able to gaze through the eyes of an incredible range of characters. For her HBO series Betty, Moselle collaborates with her subjects to make a vital piece of art, detailing life as a young woman skateboarder in New York City. Moselle describes to Schön! how she is inspired by these women who choose to break boundaries in society, and how inspiration hits her when she meets certain people on the street. “For me, it’s all about the discovery,” she tells us. “I want it to feel like a discovery.” Schön! spoke with Moselle for an exclusive interview. We love your previous work and its engagement with worlds outside our everyday experience. Could you walk us through your creative process of how your work is made within these communities, and maybe some of the collaborative aspects? I think I have this inherent instinct that hits me, that goes off when I see certain characters. When I see certain people it really draws me to them. Then, I create a story inspired by their life and around their world, rather than writing and casting something later. I’m very inspired by people… Read more »
interview | krysta rodriguez
In Netflix’s Halston, Krysta Rodriguez dances across the screen, carrying herself exactly like the icon she portrays — Liza Minnelli. “I often say that Liza and Halston are the true love story of the show,” Rodriguez tells us. “They were each other’s soulmates.” The actress’ upbeat and loving personality can be felt in her take on Liza, demonstrating a beautiful friendship between her and the titular figure. Schön! spoke to Rodriguez to hear more about the show, her research process and what she has coming next. Hi Krysta! Now that things are reopening, how have you been enjoying your summer so far? What have you been up to? It’s been so wonderful! Everything has really changed since me and all my friends were vaccinated. I’m travelling again and getting to have intimate weekends with friends. It’s been amazing to watch New York come back to life. What was it like to do your own version of “Bonjour Paris!” at The Battle of Versailles? Could you recount your experience on the day of filming? It was a joy to be able to recreate those iconic numbers. We filmed during the pandemic, so getting a taste of theatre after so long was… Read more »
interview | felix mallard
The song “Time Moves Slow” by BADBADNOTGOOD is a glimpse into Felix Mallard’s mind as he processes the pandemic. “This song has been on repeat,” the Ginny and Georgia actor shares. “[It’s] a reminder that time will move slowly, but love, and that deep, true, honest connection is worth weathering any storm. It was a reminder to keep going. Put my head down, hold onto the ones I love and keep hope that brighter days are ahead.” In both Ginny and Georgia, his new Netflix series, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a musical comedy currently airing on NBC, Mallard is an absolute standout, commanding the screen with a wonderful complexity. It’s immediately clear Mallard is experienced; he built a fanbase as the star of CBS’ Happy Together, where he played a character based on Harry Styles, before appearing in All The Bright Places with Elle Fanning and Netflix’s Locke & Key among many other roles. Now, as Ginny and Georgia becomes a stunning success, Schön! spoke to Mallard for a personal take on his character Marcus, learning ASL, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and what he hopes to do next. It looks like you filmed Ginny and Georgia and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist… Read more »

interview | hisham qumhiyeh + josé lapaz-rodriguez
Editor’s note: In this Schön! online exclusive, photographer Abby Wright sits down and captures Hisham Qumhiyeh and José Lapaz-Rodriguez, of houses House of Eon and House of Xtravaganza, to discuss their experiences in the ballroom scene. This piece was produced and written pre-COVID-19. José and Hisham sat down to speak with me about their stories and what inspires them to dance. I first saw them voguing at a mini ball with the House of Eon — a performing group that currently throws balls at The House of Yes and bars in Brooklyn, NY. They spoke about how their movement relates to their own stories, bodies, and the climate of the world. We wanted to talk about how they choose to dance discrimination and violence away, and how they support each other through all odds in a tense political time. José and Hisham have beautiful stories to tell through voguing and are two contemporary powerful voices of the ballroom community. You recently performed and gave the audience a glimpse of what happens during a ball. What did you think of the experience? Hisham: It was a great time. The house of Eon regularly throws mini balls at different locations and we… Read more »
