Alison Oliver is captivating on and off screen, transforming herself into characters that are so varied she can’t be known for just one thing. She chats with us for her Schön! 47 cover story while radiating in LOEWE to discuss her upcoming film The Order, a historical true crime thriller set in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It’s one of the many intense roles she has under her belt and when speaking with her, you almost expect star quality to radiate from every fibre of her being. While it does, you also get the sense that she’s just like the rest of us.

The film, directed by Justin Kurzel and based on the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, follows lone FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) as he seeks to take the group down. She stars as Debbie Matthews, wife to Bob Matthews (played by Nicholas Hoult), the leader of an American neo-Nazi terrorist group. “What scared me about the role was playing a person inside of that world – a person that I didn’t actually understand on the page, a person I felt quite angry with – and trying to understand why people live these lives,” she reveals. “It taught me a lot about how people can truly become brainwashed in their isolation and only surrounding themselves with people who have a very particular view or opinion.”

In just four years, Oliver has established herself as a rapidly rising star, being named in 2023 as one of Variety’s “10 Actors to Watch”. She’s also been juggling her work with The Hope Foundation – providing safety, healthcare and education to disadvantaged children in Kolkata, India – with the filming of the mini-series Task. The show sees her as an underperforming state police officer who joins a task force led by FBI agent Tom (Mark Ruffalo) to solve a string of drug-house robberies.

This idea of exploring a character outside of what’s written in the script – and depicted on screen – is something that Oliver brings to each role she takes on, fuelling her evolution as an actor. As she continues to hone her craft, her appreciation for her career only grows. “It’s such a beautiful thing to have a job [where] you’re getting to examine life as you’re going through it, and then you attempt to recreate what you interpret, understand – or don’t understand. I find it very unifying and, at times; quite a healing career.”
