A multi-dimensional artist with a globetrotting sense of style, Sofie Royer is ready for the world to hear her next chapter. Royer, who stuns in CHANEL for her Schön! 46 cover story, has just released her new single “Paris is burning,” the first single from her forthcoming third album. “There’s a liberating uncontrollability in my works,” says the self-taught artist. “With music, I sometimes have to fight against a notion of formality dating back to my childhood. That doesn’t exist for me with painting. It’s very honest and cathartic.”
She resides in Vienna, but has ties to LA, New York, London, Paris and Austria either as a DJ, radio host, or digital manager. It was working for Stones Throw Records, though, that set everything in motion. Her first solo album Cult Survivor , released in 2020, marked the start of her own artist project. “This wasn’t a deliberate choice,” she says simply. “There was no alternative path for me.”
Pulling from inspiration from other esteemed creatives, like French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and Italian director Tinto Brass, Royer feels compelled to weave her own artistic flair into her work. She’s been successful in both the music scene and the art world, and her paintings have been exhibited in vibrant cities like Salzburg, Leipzig and Berlin, among others. “There’s a liberating uncontrollability in my works,” says the self-taught artist. “With music, I sometimes have to fight against a notion of formality dating back to my childhood. That doesn’t exist for me with painting. It’s very honest and cathartic.”
For Royer, who has naturally become a muse through her artistic and fashion choices, like being dressed by CHANEL for her concerts, it is the all-encompassing world that she’s creating through her music that is really resonating with audiences. “The only concern I really have is making something timeless and transcendent.”
