Family is everything for Aaron Altaras . The German actor speaks to us for his Schön! 46 Valentino , he reflects on how, after honing his craft for over two decades and appearing in projects like Unorthodox and The Invisibles , he’s ready for the next chapter. With his latest role in The Zweiflers CANNESSERIES awards, that new chapter is unfolding.
While discussing the significance of the show’s title, Altaras explains, “Zweiflers, which is a family name but also translates to ‘doubters’ in German, reflects the central themes of the series: uncertainty, introspection and the search for meaning. The Zweiflers is centred around family, identity and growing up, while highlighting the challenges that come with them.”
Altaras grew up in a Jewish household, and even though he didn’t have a particularly religious upbringing, he feels a deep connection to his character. Samuel’s struggles resonate with him on a personal level, as he navigates similar challenges while getting older. On top of that, a portion of the series was filmed in the hospital where Altaras was born, which felt serendipitous and made his connection to Samuel even stronger.
A true family affair, The Zweiflers also features his brother, fellow actor Leo Altaras. Describing his brother as his best friend, he emphasises their unique bond and intuitive understanding of each other. “He’s the coolest guy in the world and the only person I can communicate with without talking,” he reveals. “We can read each other’s minds. It happens almost daily where we say the same thing at the same time.”
At its core, the show is a reminder to “talk to people from different cultures, especially in the times we’re living in, because most people are very different from what you think they are.”Altaras’ understanding of strength and power is deeply rooted in authenticity and resilience. “To me, strength is being able to do what I want and feel healthy while doing it,” he tells us. “I feel powerful that I get to say what I want and have people actually listen to me.”
