“If I told my 17-year-old self that I would inspire a generation by just trusting my gut and being who I am, she might have not believed me,” says Lavigne. “Knowing now that I’ve been part of empowering a whole generation of fierce, independent women is beyond words. I’ve never been one to conform to standards and I am so stoked knowing that my journey has encouraged so many others!”
Under the air of 2000s nostalgia, it can be easy to forget that Lavigne’s ascent to superstardom was also met with critique and judgement at the time, and the industry was particularly hard on successful women in the public eye. “There were times I had to stand my ground and prove that I belonged, but that just fueled my determination,” she recalls. “Now, I see so many other women stepping up and taking charge of the industry. It is really a moment that makes me proud.”
Now, looking ahead, she’s looking forward to doing what she does best: making music. She just wrapped an international tour for Love Sux and now is finding herself at the studio often. “I’m really excited about embracing the now and the new,” she shares. “[I’m] looking to drop new music next year and book tour dates.”
