Have you ever dreamt of a real road adventure: to just pack your most essential belongings and set off into the unknown? That’s exactly what Nikki van der Spek from the Netherlands, Vasco Santos from Portugal and Agustin (Agus) Ostos from Spain did. They embarked on a 40-day journey from Germany to Namibia, overcoming countless obstacles while immersing themselves in breathtaking landscapes.

This epic trip was part of BMW Motorrad’s ‘The Road to Namibia’ experience, inspired by the spirit of exploration and camaraderie found in the International GS Trophy. For years, the GS Trophy has brought together riders from across the globe, united by their passion for adventure, riding skills and the unparalleled capabilities of BMW’s GS motorcycles. The 2024 edition took place in Namibia, a land renowned for its stunning deserts, wildlife and challenging terrains, offering the perfect backdrop for this unique competition.

Without knowing each other beforehand, van der Spek, Santos and Ostos were selected by BMW to embark on their 40-day journey aboard the brand-new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure. Starting in Garmisch- Partenkirchen and traversing through the Swiss Alps, the French countryside, Spain and Morocco, they finally arrived in Namibia, where the wild landscapes pushed both the riders and their motorcycles to the limit. Along the way, they encountered unexpected challenges, forged new friendships and discovered the transformative power of adventure.

Schön! alive speaks to the intrepid riders who took on an epic 40-day journey across two continents.

How has it been getting to know each other so quickly?

Santos. It was very easy because you travel so close to each other.

van der Spek. Yes, it was 40 days where we got to know each other closely and our ups and downs.

Santos. Total strangers, 24/7 together but with one shared passion: riding motorbikes; the ingredients for an amazing trip! I think we’re both travellers – I like to explore the world – and we also love bikes, so I think this is the perfect combination to do something like this. We are used to trips that are five, six, maybe ten days, but not 40. It’s a big difference. Sleeping in tents under the rain was fun too.

van der Spek. The wide range of people that joined outside of the three are now newly found friends.

What have you learned from each other?

van der Spek. Maybe patience.

Santos. Nikki was very good at planning the road. It was cool to see.

Did you get to experience something new or learn something new about yourself?

van der Spek. How wonderful it is to meet new people; a group of complete strangers at the beginning of the trip and becoming friends for life by the end. In normal life, I really need some time for myself between all the work, but during this trip, it all fit together.

Which places most inspired you?

van der Spek. The changing nature and landscapes when crossing a new border are fascinating. Switzerland always remains at the top of my list when it comes to breathtaking views; it’s a stunning country to explore by motorbike. The Pyrenees are also incredibly beautiful, and, in Africa, the endless landscapes and sparsely populated land of Namibia are truly special.

What were the highlights in terms of the wildlife?

van der Spek. It was when we were going with a group of rhinos.

Santos. I think it was the group of lions that was great for me.

van der Spek. Camping in the wild nature of Botswana was definitely a highlight for me: surrounded by wildlife and hearing countless animal sounds during the night. There were four female lions like 50 metres from us and then we would wake up with footprints outside of the tents. That was really cool.

And can you share any recommendations for local food?

van der Spek. Alora Yurts in Lajaron, Spain was a magical place: immersed in nature, back to basics and fantastic, freshly prepared dishes. One of my favourite things about travelling is discovering the local cuisine. I always try to find the spots where the locals eat.

Was the trip challenging?

Santos. Sleeping in different hotels every day, spending 24 hours together riding the bike for eight to ten hours a day, sometimes sleeping five hours, not to mention travelling in rain. Some days we felt like, “Let’s not do this; it’s impossible,” and then one of us is always the cheerful one, bringing positivity.

van der Spek. The challenges you encounter while traveling are there to be solved. Don’t lose your humour. Trust your team and work together.

What is your best travel advice for someone considering such a journey?

van der Spek. Prepare yourself well. Make sure you can do basic repairs, fix your tires, and always have communication access via satellite or a local SIM card in case of emergency. Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy and take in all the experiences.

What would you say to those who are considering a new adventure but lack the confidence?

van der Spek. Just set a date and go. People are always, “So I want to do this,” and then I say, “OK, take your agenda and just plan a date,” and they always say like, “Yeah, no, but I have to work or other stuff.” Just make it work. Set a date and you can find solutions for problems. And then just do it.

Santos: What is my advice? I advise people that if they wait, they think about those excuses. Think about if the memory that they’re going to get is going to be bigger than the excuses. Most likely the answer is going to be yes. So yeah, in this case, we get the memories for life and friends for life. Be brave.
