We continue our conversation with Ricky Martin as part of Schön! 40 — #AllAboutMusic.
So your tour is planned to kick off in September: it’s a 63-date tour, and you’re going on the road with Enrique Iglesias.
Yes, in the US and Canada. It’s a tour that many people had been speaking to us about for years. Not because we have to, but because we want to. Tickets went on sale just before the pandemic, but the reaction now is still very vibrant…
Just before the pandemic, you released Pausa, the first part of a two-part album.
The album was going to be called Movimiento, which obviously – as it turned out – was exactly what we weren’t allowed to do [laughs]. So, I said, “Pausa, hold on a second. The cosmos is telling us to halt, to pause.” Even though the album was almost done, I decided to not release any fast songs: I was going to focus on a mid-tempo, ballad album.
Volume 2 of the album is Play. What kind of sound can we expect?
Listen, just because it’s called Play doesn’t mean that there won’t be a ballad. I’m romantic. [laughs] I will throw one in there. I want to lift spirits, and go back to my Latin sounds, my Afro influences. Let’s just have fun with what we do. People said [Pausa] wasn’t what they expected, but I’m going to my essence, to this quiet space. It was very cathartic.
2021 is the 30-year anniversary of your solo career… How do you celebrate something like that?
That’s what I told my record label, “I don’t know… get creative! Go crazy, ‘cause I want to have fun!” And, in the blink of an eye, my schedule was completely filled. [laughs] We have incredible projects, not only music. I will be on screen. I will be narrating a love story; it’s a beautiful project about love that I’m putting together with an important streamer. At the end of the day, we want to talk about the importance of love, through all of this!
