When you’re face-to-face with Grace Van Dien , it’s hard not to fall in love with her. The actress, avid gamer, and lover of Pedro Pascal is all about connection — it’s something that she brings up throughout her Schön! 44 digital cover story. Dressed in Calvin Klein , Van Dien is equal parts playful and powerful. With just one episode of Stranger Things , Van Dien took over the world. “I think a lot of my characters do have similarities,” Van Dien ponders. “I just try to play with the different levels of strength that I give them. That’s the main component that they don’t share – some are a lot stronger than others, and sometimes the softness doesn’t change. It’s about how they handle things based on their strength… That’s the most important thing to me.”
Her latest project is What Comes Around , an indie flick about a teen who is seduced online by an older man. It’s a film that, to her surprise, mirrored experiences she’s had growing up. “I shared a similar experience to what Anna goes through when I was in high school,” she explains. “I used to want to be a psychologist or a writer because both things were therapeutic to me. When I found acting, I discovered that it was much more therapeutic. Getting to play roles that I have personal relations or similar memories with has been really helpful. My character in What Comes Around handles it with more strength than I was able to, and it feels healing for me.”
She once spoke with Schön! back in 2019 declaring: “Nothing is planned yet, but I’m looking for something that matters.” It’s obvious she’s found things that matter: connection, creativity, and characters.
