Since the first reported case in 1980, AIDs has remained one of the leading causes of death in the world. It remains one of the most devastating pandemics in history, resulting in the deaths of over 35 million people since the condition was first identified. Being diagnosed as HIV positive today implies a very different fate to what it did in the 1980s, given the scientific advances in HIV treatment and a far greater understanding of the condition. However, there is still stigma surrounding the disease which must be addressed. World AIDs Day was established on the 1st of December, 1988, to do just that, by asking people worldwide to unite in the fight against AIDS.

Launched in 2004, DAA (Designers Against Aids) is a non-profit organisation which aims to destroy the stigma surrounding AIDs and to raise awareness of the condition in the international media through creativity (be it music, fashion, film or design). It has since collaborated with a multitude of world-renowned designers and fashion brands, from Marc Jacobs, to Eastpak and H&M. Extending to all areas of the creative industries, acclaimed musicians Katy Perry, Rihanna, Cyndi Lauper, Pharrell Williams and Yoko Ono have all lent their voices in support of the initiative.

This year, DAA are asking for your selfies. But this is no vanity project; this is a #safesexyselfie. So whilst your selfie may come in any shape or form, be prepared to pose with your favourite safe sex slogan. Once you’ve prepped the perfect selfie, upload it to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #safesexyselfie. The best selfie will win a $100 gift voucher to spend in the DAA’s online store.

The campaign – which is currently in its second year- aims to promote safe sex on World AIDs day, and far beyond. By the end of 2015, it was estimated that 36.7 million people were living with HIV. With the message of safe sex being as important as ever, this campaign offers you the chance to have your voice heard in the fight against AIDS– and it’s as simple as taking a selfie.
