Under the open sky at Parc de Saint-Cloud, Michael Rider’s Summer 2026 collection for Celine felt like a breezy continuation of an ongoing, stylish narrative. As Rider noted, the show was intended to feel as if the previous season “never really ended,” affirming that the clothes, shoes, and everything in the collection were designed to become simply “a part of the memories we make wearing them.”
Rider harmonised the house’s dominant, sometimes conflicting, aesthetics without erasing its past. The collection managed to marry the skinny-legged rock-chic of the Slimane era with the confident, architectural ease of Phoebe Philo’s time. This was evident in the way oversized blazers, often cinched at the waist, were paired confidently over ultra-skinny trousers and jeans, giving a sharp, defined silhouette that satisfied both ‘Slimaniacs’ and ‘Philophiles’ simultaneously.
The collection was also heavily infused with a polished, preppy Americana sensibility, a style Rider honed during his time at Ralph Lauren, effortlessly spliced with Parisian sophistication. Rider grounded the wardrobe in classics destined for endurance: equestrian chinos, crisp navy blazers, and chunky, ‘70s-style gold jewellery that was stacked in abundance. This classic foundation was playfully disrupted by flashes of summer heat: ‘60s daisy-printed micro-minis that injected bursts of vibrant primary colour, and sleek, draped black silk tops that transitioned seamlessly into evening.
Crucially, the accessories emphasised life lived actively. Satin silk scarves, a major recurring motif, were treated not as static decoration but as versatile extensions of the attitude, tied carelessly or integrated into the garments. Even the logos, often controversial, were handled with a lightness, appearing on monogrammed totes that looked casually grabbed on the way out the door. The collection also saw the introduction of the New Luggage bag, a revamp of a house icon, with its ‘Smile Variation’ featuring a playful, grinning zip – a subtle injection of humour into luxury. With elements like the Celine bicycle helmet slung on the crook of an arm, Rider presented a vision of French style that is sophisticated, utterly wearable, and always in motion.
