There is satisfaction in overcoming a challenge. BLACKTAILOR embodies this ethos immensely — understanding that toughness prevails even when we face life challenges. Their new A/W collection is inspired by Scotland’s Isle of Skye, a place with a distinct uniqueness that forces its passerby’s to be tough when soaring in the skies.
Schön! speaks with the creative powerhouses behind BLACKTAILOR to learn more about this collection, the importance of selecting materials to highlight toughness, and more.
What is your brand’s mission and ethos?
Making functional designs for daily purposes with unique details. Start from design to make the product, not limited by the cost, and price cannot define our design. We want to make a good balance between price and quality. Black is a colour that provides a comfort zone feeling in most situations.
How do you describe your FW22 collection’s design aesthetics?
Minimal. Comfortable. Accessible.
Was there anything different that you did while designing this collection compared to previous one?
Using heavier and soft fabric brings comfort to FW22 with more relaxed-fit cargo pants in the collection and more simple designs.
You opted to select heavier materials as a way of showcasing ‘toughness.’ Why?
Heavier materials in designs with straight lines and right angles visualize toughness the first time meet the designs.
The Isle of Skye was an inspiration for this collection, how did it inspire your designs and collections as a whole?
The weather and location of the Isle of Skye are challenging and the concept of the FW22 collection reflects the concept of challenge. Everyone has a personal challenge, and we would like to bring this concept into the collection.
The word “challenge” is used as a descriptor for this collection, why does that word in particular resonate with you and how does it embody this collection’s spirit?
I have some personal challenges, and everyone does. The hustle never ends.
Are there specific artists, designers or craftsmen that have influenced your work?
Carhartt, Fear of God, WTAPS, Yeezy.
How do you see the BLACKTAILOR label growing and evolving in the future?
Create more fittings and styles of garments in different collections. Launch collections for different lines of products focusing on a more functional design and fabric.
Lastly, what do you hope those that wear BLACKTAILOR designs feel or think when wearing the clothing?
Receiving a product that exceeds their expectations, the garment would not limit their movements, and they found the designs are functional.
