undichotomy

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Di·chot·o·my; /dīˈkädəmē/; noun: A division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different. In this Schön! editorial, the examination occurs between the rigid dichotomy of the gender binary within the fashion world, the presentation of being masculine or feminine in what we wear, and the perception of it’s conjunction within a biological aspect; the life science of the male and female form, in a story titled “UnDichotomy.” In this story, photographer Ashley Chappell and stylist Rowaine Grant chip away at the fragility of the societal gender construct from a visual vantage point, blending and distorting the ideas we once thought only laid bare one truth, the black-and-white interpretation of gender as a male or female only binary. Schön! 46 | jilou wearing Nike

Posted by & filed under beauty, culture, fashion, video.

Breaking has given Jilou a new sense of freedom. The medal-winning B-Girl, who wears Nike for her Schön! 46 cover, spent years using the art of movement as a form of expression. “I was always a kid that loved movement,” she states, touching on the time spent exploring circus, aerial acrobatics and gymnastics. It was breaking, though, when she felt truly free. “When I tried breaking, I knew that this was it. I found it. It’s the freedom of movement. The fact that there is a foundation that we can always rely on, but that we are always free to express ourselves.” Breaking stretches as far back as the ’70s in the streets of The Bronx and has ties to hip hop. It makes sense that it’s become a competitive sport — one that has risen all the way to the Olympics. “I want people to take breakers seriously, just as much as they take any other athletes seriously,” she says. “We work hard and I want to show that to the public.” Working hard for Jilou means a meticulous workout and training regime — perfecting specific combos, learning new skills, and adapting current ones. It’s the training, she says,… Read more »

Schön! 46 | jilou feat. nike | all about power + strength | OUT NOW

Posted by & filed under beauty, culture, fashion.

Challenges are what make life interesting, and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. – Joshua Marine What does it mean to be powerful? To be strong? When we considered these questions in preparation for this issue, we quickly realised something vital. Though it may initially seem like it, these words are not merely physical attributes. Rather, they’re something deeper – symbolic embodiments of resilience, determination, and the endless possibility of human potential. With this realisation as our rallying cry, we sought to redefine these terms in the modern consciousness, elevating the stories of those who displayed feats of incredible emotional and physical strength while highlighting those who showcased their own power in any way they could. All of this brought us to today, where we are proud to present Schön! 46: All About Power + Strength. This energetic issue of Schön! explores the captivating intersection of power and strength in all its forms. From the commanding rhythms of a musician to the contagious energy of a big game win, to the emotional weight of an actor’s performance, we uncover the essence of what it means to harness one’s inner strength and command the power to move hearts and minds…. interview | anna sawai

Posted by & filed under culture.

Anna Sawai is no stranger to action-packed roles previously appearing in Universal’s F9 and Apple TV+’s Pachinko and of course the Godzilla spinoff Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Her latest role, however, is unlike any of the previous: she is the savvy translator Lady Mariko in FX’s 17th-century show Shōgun. Lady Mariko is not only a complex character that is navigating a politically entrenched landscape where women have limited rights, but she is simultaneously dynamic and powerful. “We really get to see the whole journey, and we get to kind of grow with her,” says Sawai about Lady Mariko’s character. Sawai spoke to Schön! about preparing for her role as Lady Mariko, what she hopes viewers take from the show, and what types of roles she would like to pursue next.  How is your year going so far? So far it has been great. With the release of my latest show – the reception has been very unexpected in the most positive way. So, I have been doing a lot of travelling and talking to a lot of people about the new show which is very exciting.  You were born in New Zealand, and then moved to Japan. Tell us more… Read more »

Cloe Wilder is wise beyond her years. At just 18 years old, the Florida-born singer-songwriter is quickly making a name for herself as one of this generation’s most promising young storytellers. Pulling inspiration from acclaimed artists like Lana Del Rey and Bon Iver, Cloe’s music is a breath of fresh air with notes of heartbreak and adolescent nostalgia weaved throughout. Having recently toured the US supporting acts like Spencer Sutherland and Charlotte Sands, Cloe introduces us to her brand new EP, I Spent My Summer On The Road, out today.  “I Spent My Summer on the Road is my own little coming-of-age scrapbook,” she explains. “I’ve been working on these songs since I was 15. I said everything that I wanted to. I talked about music, medication, relationships, and how it all affected me. I wanted to illuminate that side of myself and I’ve never felt closer to a project.” To celebrate this milestone release, Cloe Wilder unveils her Schön! curated selection, including an underrated artist she loves, a song that she wishes she wrote, and more.  Hey Cloe, what are you up to right now?  Hi! interview | jannik schümann

Posted by & filed under culture.

Meeting Jannik Schümann is like meeting a long-lost friend. Nestled outside a cafe in Berlin, Schümann meets Schön! at a time when both Spring and his career are in full bloom. The German actor is equal parts warm and approachable as he chats about his latest project, the mini-series Disko 76. The series focuses on Doro, a woman who flees from her marriage, discovers disco, and falls for Robert, played by Schümann. It’s a role that, in a way, has made his career come full circle. He grew up as a child in the rural quarter of Hamburg and found a passion for music, dance, and theatre. Disko 76 brings together the aesthetic of the 70s and the secret discotèques where people could be free to be who they are. For Schümann, who has championed characters and projects that uplift lesser-known stories, it’s a place to explore the societal norms in Germany in the 70s and what they meant for women. Meeting up for a spot of lunch, Schümann sits with Schön! to discuss what attracted him to the role, why Germany needs to support more queer representation in the media, and more. What was it about your character Robert in… Read more »

design to move | 40 years of TECHNOGYM

Posted by & filed under culture.

It’s time to move. This year, during the 2024 Milan Design Week, Technogym marks its 40-year milestone with a special exhibition aptly titled “Design to Move,” showcasing 40 unique Technogym Benches designed by 40 different international artists and designers. This exhibition explores the profound relationship between design and wellness, blending style with functionality—a core principle of Technogym’s ethos since its inception. Technogym was founded by Nerio Alessandri at the age of 22 in his family garage, driven by a passion for technology and design (TECHNO) combined with fitness (GYM). Over the years, the brand has evolved from a fitness equipment company into a comprehensive ecosystem of wellness lifestyle and a leading force in Italian design. The “Design to Move” project transformed Technogym Benches into artistic expressions, featuring creations by prominent figures like Patricia Urquiola, Antonio Citterio, Nendo, and many others. The exhibition was visually orchestrated in collaboration with architect and designer Giulio Cappellini and curated by Bruna Roccasalva, who invited 40 artists and designers worldwide to interpret wellness through their unique perspectives. The exhibition’s opening on April 15 coincides with Italy’s Made in Italy Day, celebrating the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci, who emphasized the importance of movement in… Read more »

In The Syndicate, Anastasia Siten goes through the course of her day working in an office 9-5 job, ending with her being fired. Off the bat, she is running late to work and arrives flustered and stressed. Becoming more undone with her hair and makeup being more lived in and even distressed, the story concludes with Siten in tears leaving the office allowing the viewer to interpret why she was fired: Was she just a bad employee or is there something more sinister going on? Inspired by the day-to-day life of a “finance bro” and the sinister nature of large corporations, the name “Syndicate” can either be defined as “an association of people or firms formed to promote a common interest or carry out a business enterprise,” or “a loose affiliation of gangsters in control of organized criminal activities.” Photographed by Simran Kaur with creative direction and fashion by Talitha Howden. time for fashion to grow up | fashion week round up

Posted by & filed under fashion.

It’s usually time after fashion weeks finish to write a trends round-up and tell readers what’s what in the way of fashion news. The jacket, the suit, the pleated skirt, whatever the “hot item”, the “must have”, or the “on trend” look of the moment might be. The truth in 2024 is who cares about trends in the old-fashioned way? “Red is best;” “Brown is the new black” or “Pick plaid,” or the really obvious ones like “tweed for winter” and we know what Mrs Priestly thought of “florals for spring.”  There also used to be many press releases waxing lyrical about a designer’s “vision” or using cultural appropriation such as kimonos or Icelandic patterning, which now seem curiously out of date with modern ideas on fashion.  Of course, there are still trends, but they are bigger and have more gravitas, as well as lasting longer. Green Issues and Sustainability, for example, are “trends” but not for merely a season, for in these cases they are carrying forward into decades.  In 2023 there was a lot of talk about discrete luxury, understated dressing and a new kind of elegance and style which was not uptight but was not sportswear. Indeed, this… Read more »

The Gen Beta generation, born between 2025-2039, will have grown up in a world of AI. It’s fascinating to imagine the technology and beliefs that will shape Gen Beta’s world. It’s easy to envision a future where AI companions are a common part of life, providing assistance and even friendship. The concept of having a digital life companion is already mentally within reach, but what about physically? What would an AI/robot look like? With a steady hand and an inspired mind, Grobotek transcends traditional boundaries, seamlessly blending the worlds of visual artistry. From intricate designs adorning the bodies of his clients to the lyrical prose that flows from his pen, his work resonates with depth and meaning, leaving an indelible mark on those who encounter it. Schön! chats with Grobotek about his work, his style, and more.  Can you tell us about your journey into the world of tattooing and how you became a tattoo artist? I started tattooing my friends and myself by buying a machine when I was twenty and in the army, where I was a paratrooper. In those days I didn’t get out of the barracks much, my life was pretty regulated and I spent a lot of time drawing and tattooing whenever I had a bit of free time. When I left the army, I kept my machine with me, continuing to tattoo friends, and myself a little too much, in fact –… Read more »

A woman looking out the window. She contemplates the mountains, the deer and even places a bowl on the sill with little seeds so that the birds come to eat. This is how one imagines María José Llergo when she enters her personal universe thanks to her music. The young Andalusian debuted in 2020 with her first album, Sanación. Three years later and with a Goya award for Best Original Song, María José has released her second, ULTRABELLEZA. A path that began with a healing process now continues with a great party to celebrate love and diversity. An ode to the beauty that we all have within us and the power that love has. The very positive and hopeful message of a woman who makes the world warm while she looks out her window enjoying the little things. Schön! chats with Llergo about her music, what inspires her, and more. Today was a “blue Monday,” how was your start of the week? Pretty good for a blue Monday. the world of science and fashion | no boundaries

Posted by & filed under fashion.

There is a distinct, yet overlooked, connection between the fields of science and the art of fashion. The topics addressed go from light and colour perception affecting our emotions through our central nervous system, specifically how red affects arousal. The exploration of fabrics and how dyes implicate our health from a toxicologic point of view. An in-depth analysis of the most common textiles (cotton, silk, and polyester) and their chemical characteristics. The advancement of science in the first and second generations of nanotechnology and their incision in clothing and early ’60s aesthetic trend, the Space-Age fashion, came from aerospace competition during the Cold War.  Fashion since ancient times has always been a psychological feature of the evolution of society. The rating of people about clothing is a key factor in comprehending the sociological and scientific meaning of clothing choices, from people’s form of expression to creating different status groups, and their interest in such distinct lifestyles.  The symbolic relationship between these two pillars of society extends from biological principles to laws of physics and runaway shows to the creativity of stylists. The interconnection between both domains should be more appreciated as it is essential to unlock the full potential of both… Read more »

interview | nicolas maury

Posted by & filed under culture.

Few performers are as agile in holding multiple talents together as Nicolas Maury. Although he stepped into the international limelight with his role as Hervé in the Netflix series Call My Agent, Nicolas Maury already had a wealth of acting experiences behind him, from his debut with revered French filmmaker Patrice Chéreau, a career in French cinema, to an appearance opposite Maggie Gyllenhaal in Paris, Je t’aime. But, it was on stage that Maury really began to weave together his talents in one web, training in Paris at the national theatre school before moving onto regular roles both in theatre. Now, in 2024, he acts, directs and writes, and, last year, he released his debut album. After his shoot with Schön!, we find Nicolas Maury in a secluded cocktail bar at The Hoxton in Paris, and he settles into a plush armchair to discuss some of the subjects that animate him most. He transmits an insatiable will to understand and share, and is generous in formulating his experience into words. Delving into the idea of generosity on stage, of discipline, he describes how various art forms all combine to create a form of self-less truth, always in the search for… Read more »

Curating bespoke objects is something that Aquazzura Founder and Creative Director Edgardo Osorio has always had an affinity for. As a brand that is synonymous with Italian luxury, it’s apt that Osorio crafted and designed the Aquazzura Casa collection based on his love for interior design and the art of tablescaping. Bringing the same uniqueness as found in their internationally-renowned footwear, the homeware collection focuses on opulence — think vibrant hues, whimsical patterns and motifs, and balancing the traditional with the modern by weaving the collection around four themes. Next month, Osorio will showcase a new Aquazzura Casa collection during the Milan Furniture Fair, Salone del Mobile 2024. Ahead of that, Schön! Magazine chats with Osorio about developing the four themes, what separates the Casa collection from other lifestyle brands, and more. How does the Casa collection reflect the essence and style of the Aquazzura brand? The collection reflects and reinterprets the stylistic codes of Aquazzura. It is playful and colourful, refined and exquisitely crafted with a touch of maximalism, all elements that you can find in my shoe and jewellery lines. There are many Aquazzura symbols in the Casa collection, the stripe motif is reinterpreted in the Jaipur line… Read more »

Nair plays Tarak an animal-loving nobleman-turned-blacksmith who, after reading the script, Nair connected with instantly. With the response from the first part of the film, which came out at the end of 2023, audiences connected with Tarak, too, and are eager to see how his story unfolds in the second part of the film out in April. Schön! chats with Nair while he’s in the middle of filming his next project — portraying a detective in the upcoming BBC thriller Virdee — to chat about his career, what the film has meant to him, and more. Completely comprehensive, this exhibition featured creatives who excel in many visual arts, including a photography showcase accompanied by an interior design exhibit and the debut of a new IKEA collection packed with super playful home decor. The primary photography showcase, Life At Home IKEA+, featured images by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, exhibiting 25 photographs depicting people in their homes across different cities around the world. Annie also created a mentorship program leading six up-and-coming photographers who were all assigned the task of capturing friends or family in the intimacy of a familial residence, each mentee contributing unique and thoughtful storytelling to the project. Based on feedback from a Life at Home report that stated that 48% of people globally did not believe that their life at home was reflected in the media, the ‘Life At Home’ project was also incepted. Before this report, an authentic portrayal of the average person’s home living was not represented — and while architecture and design is beautiful to market and showcase, creating… Read more »

second skin | sinfonia numero

Tights are like a second skin — acting as a barrier or a shield to protect us from the outside world. Although many brands have kept tights traditional — made as close fitting as possible for practical reasons — SINFONIA NUMERO is leaning into how tights can be used as a dynamic fusion of aesthetics and language, where style intertwines with the eloquence of expression. With words etched into each pair of tights, SINFONIA NUMERO weaves together a celebration of words and their transformative power. Just as a symphony orchestrates a harmonious blend of music and voices, the absence of a numerical value in “N” or “NUMBER” symbolizes liberation, opening doors to endless possibilities. Rather than fixating on a singular composition, the brand celebrates the fluidity of change with every creation. Concealed within each pair of tights lies a poignant phrase, capturing the essence of individuality and reflecting the diverse personas of women. Drawing inspiration from cultural, social, and artistic realms, these sentences serve as elegant expressions of personality. Encouraging wearers to embrace their uniqueness, SINFONIA NUMERO invites the infusion of bold ideas into delicate spaces. Crafted with meticulous care in Italy, these tights are designed to delicately embrace the… Read more »

What happens when you have a dozen of actors all together at a film festival? I expanded this segment of my photography, and over the years, many good contacts were established.” The shoot, which happened at the recent Berlin International Film Festival — or better known as the Berlinale — is a major international film festival held annually in Berlin, Germany. “During the Berlinale 2024, my friend and actress Peri Baumeister asked me if we wanted to collaborate again, and thus the idea arose to take photos of several actors before they walked the red carpet,” Storch says. “Peri decided to ask some of her actor colleagues, and I asked my agency colleague and superb photographer Maximilian König if we wanted to implement this idea together in his studio near the red carpet. painting the runway | loewe fw24

Posted by & filed under fashion.

The paintings of American artist Albert York came to life in the Parisian show space of the FW24 Loewe collection. Transported to an art gallery where all fantasies seemed to become reality, guests sat against the backdrop of luscious shades of green and 18 of York’s paintings, representing the largest collection of the artist’s work outside of the United States. As per usual, Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson created a true idyll for the models to frolic in, dressed up in vaporous gowns and billowing pants. Celebrating York’s sentiment that the real paradise is the one we inhabit, the collection extended the artist’s reverie to the real world through exaggerated shapes, whimsical prints, and magnified proportions. In search of Eden, the lines between the masculine and the feminine are blurred to ultimately become one idiosyncratic entity arising through the designs. The opening look, a full-length dress, was deconstructed by using an oversized ornamental belt buckle, cinching the flower-patterned fabric at the waist to reveal an open back and give the bodice a V-shaped silhouette, fusing romantic lines with a hint of surrealism. Ranging from distorted tartans to Ostrich trompe l’oeil hyper-real print, the textures and patterns punctuated the collection, toying… Read more »

on court elegance | lacoste FW24

Posted by & filed under fashion.

Lacoste took over the Roland-Garros stadium this FW24 season, transforming the white lines of the centre court into the catwalk. For her Parisian debut, creative director Pelagia Kolotouros reflects on the label’s archives and rooted her inspiration in the decadently creative Années Folles, when founder René “the crocodile” Lacoste carried the title of number one tennis player in the world. Aptly titled “Victory of 1927”, the collection paid homage to the Davis Cup championship won by Lacoste that year. A historic win that then led to the construction of the very venue chosen to host the runway show this season. Setting the tone of the collection by merging classic tailoring with athleisure, the opening look featured a black zip-up jacket made from a waterproof technical fabric, adding in some contrast with mesh and green trim detailing at the collar, and was layered under a wool coat of the same colour, its oversized dimensions allowing for free, unrestricted movement. Breaking off the monochromatic palette with the accessories, the model carried a bright green wool blanket and a mossy green, crocodile-embossed briefcase to which was tied a silk handkerchief with printed tennis-inspired imagery. Weaving layers of references to the brand’s heritage in… Read more »

An evening encompassing everything La Maison Christian Louboutin embodies — joy, warmth, and history — was the message behind their FW 2024 show at the prestigious Le Trianon. This historic venue, dating back to 1894, holds a special place in the heart of the Pigalle district, a neighbourhood deeply cherished by the designer himself, who once called it home while nurturing his passion for footwear. The presentation was a collaborative effort, featuring the creative expertise and choreography by Leo Walk, a French artistic director, and his dance company known as “La Marche Bleue” to perform “The Loubi Show,” a moving performance that weaves together contemporary dance and the energy of street hip-hop culture. Under Walk’s creative guidance, the performance unfolds a deeply personal portrayal of friendship on stage, interweaving diverse narratives of connection and camaraderie with grace and sensitivity. Accompanied by live music from Clara Cappagli and Armand Bultheel of Agar Agar, the performance featured 12 dancers adorned in MJ Moc loafers, with some embellished specifically for the show, and the chunky Miss Sabina heeled sandals during their onstage performances designed to harmonize effortlessly with the fluidity of movement. I love every aspect of make up, but lips are really important to me because it’s what brings everything together. I love the formulas that we created because they’re not too dry and they’re hyperpigmented. They go against any luxury lipstick on the market right now and the price point is really sweet. Between both of the formulas, the one that stands out to me the most is the satin. I’m usually drawn to matte lipstick because it’s much easier to control. bringing the 70s back | H&M Studio S/S 24

Posted by & filed under fashion.

The 1970s were a vibrant and eclectic decade for fashion, marked by a mix of diverse styles that reflected the cultural shifts and social movements of the time. From boho chic, disco fever, denim and beyond, the fashion of the 1970s was characterized by a sense of experimentation, individualism, and self-expression. For their S/S24 collection, H&M Studio brings the nods from the ’70s to help usher in Spring and Summer in style.  Helping people build a modern and timeless wardrobe was the goal for Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor and head of design womenswear at H&M, and her team. Using the same effervescent essence of the ’70s, the team leaned into the zeitgeist of the era for inspiration — particularly thinking about a 1970s musician on the road who curates a wardrobe with pieces she picks up while on tour.  To learn more about the collection’s inspiration, Schön! chats with Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s creative advisor and head of design womenswear, to discuss the inspiration behind the new collection, what intrigued the team about the 1970s, and more. What were the main inspirations behind H&M Studio new spring/summer collection, particularly the emphasis on relaxed 70s clothing? For S/S24, we were thinking about… Read more »

escaping eco-style | les sources de cheverny

Posted by & filed under travel..

It’s a new year. The world is on fire, climate change is real and travellers are becoming more eco-conscious. So what better way to start 2024 with a zero-guilt destination? A couple hours out of Paris is a wild little eco-escape whose whole M.O. is fostering a relationship with Mother Nature and (quite literally) living off the land. Hidden in the Loire Valley, among 110-acres of lush forest, lies the surreptitious Les Sources de Cheverny. Arranged like a fairytale microstate, there’s a bit of everything. Scattered over the ancient forest is an 18th-century French château (with turrets, gothic windows and all) and just beyond it lies a small hamlet of elegant wooden Scandi-style cabins, grouped around a lake. This luxury sanctuary hidden in the woods is low-key but big on green morals. As soon as you make your way up the winding road leading to the estate, there’s rows upon rows of pastel bicycles by the reception for guests to use to make their way around the grounds and visit the nearby town and neighbouring vineyards. There are two places you can choose to stay in. There’s the 18th-century Château de Breuil, which is great if you like more traditional… Read more »

interview | violett beane

Violett Beane knows a thing or two about picking apart the details of a project or character. The actress, known for her diverse range of roles in both television and film, has donned a superhero suit as Jesse Quick in the DC Universe in The Flash and a journalist in God Friended Me. And just as she did with those roles — fleshing them out and uncovering the details and facts that make them interesting — she approached her intriguing new character Imogene Scott from Death and Other Details in the same way.  Beane chats with Schön! about her acting journey, the invaluable advice she offers to aspiring actors looking to make their mark in Hollywood, and more. Can you tell us a bit about your character, Imogene Scott, in the series Death and Other Details and what drew you to this role? Imogene is like most 20-somethings–on a journey to find herself, and looking in a lot of the wrong places. That’s what I found so fascinating about her, how relatable she is. She’s messy and it’s okay. It’s the most honest character I have read in a really long time. Heidi McAdams and Mike Weiss created a plethora of real… Read more »

the office

There’s a juxtaposition between the unexciting and the extraordinary; the tension and excitement of expressing one’s true self in a place that is often dull and restrictive. Stereotypically bland, the office — a common and familiar environment for many people but also one that can stifle creativity and individuality — is the backdrop of this Schön! editorial as a means to show how fashion can be a powerful tool to break free from the norms and conventions, and to make a statement about who you are and what you feel.
