Cannes is going through some type of golden renaissance. Throughout COVID and for the past two years, the city of Cannes has been worked on. Iconic hotels were shuttered to be given huge makeovers with new walkways created and roads repaved. It’s only now that Cannes is starting to look complete.
Filled with iconic seafront hotels, Cannes La Croisette is known for its iconic hotels—from the Carlton, Hotel Martinez and Mondrian Cannes—each property has gone through massive renovations and it’s only now that they’re really being unveiled. But the Mondrian is a little different from the rest: it’s the only hotel on the Croisette with its own massive garden that leads out to their private beach club.
Opened only last year, Mondrian Cannes is the new kid on the Croisette scene. Decor-wise, rooms are fresh, bright and elegant (which is the kind of vibe you want by the sea) and playful, with carpet mimicking ocean waves. However, as aesthetically pleasing as the rooms are, the standout feature has to be the French windows that open onto a massive terrace overlooking the sea. The rest of the hotel is sophisticated and elegant, with clean lines and imbued with a naturalist vitality—think wood, marble, leather and plant fibres.
Food-wise, Cannes has FINALLY got some fantastic sushi and Japanese food on the scene with Mondrian’s Mr. Nakamoto restaurant. Managed by executive chef Pierrick Cizeron, the menu is simple: seafood, sushi and meat dishes, all infused and elevated with Japanese flavours. Schön! recommends: the omakase ‘I rely on you’ that will give you the best of Nakamoto’s sushi and signature rolls. If sushi isn’t your jam, the mains are incredible. Must-haves are: their famous black cod marinated with miso and yuzu sauce, the teriyaki-soaked salmon and (a surprising one) soba noodles coated in a creamy saké sauce and topped with baeri caviar. Dessert-wise, go for the black sesame crème brulée or some fresh mochi.
Major love to: Mondrian’s private beach club, Hyde Beach Cannes. Totally classic French Riviera style with colourful striped cabanas and quintessential turquoise parasols, the vibes are casual and chic during the day but at night, it’s probably the liveliest beach club on the Croisette.
Chic, sleek and modern, Mondrian Cannes stands out from the old-school hotel scene and is set to become a Croisette favourite.
