“I live with nature and I am inspired from it,” says Mark Gong, the 20-year-old designer behind MarkGong Studio. Gong has a sensitive and refined approach to fashion, his aesthetic has always drawn inspiration from mother nature, and it’s also the creative force behind his latest collection. With his 2019 Spring Summer Collection, he takes an entirely conceptual approach. It features a total of 11 looks with the names: The Fog, The Air, The Beach, The Ocean, The Jungle, The Tree, The Water, The Cloud, The Shell, The Wave, and The Root. While a lot of conventional fashion is focused on expressing the inner strength of women, MarkGong Studio takes on the incredible task of manifesting the force of nature in womenswear.
The looks draw on Gong’s high school experience. It was a time when he was completely isolated from the outside world, surrounded by the great outdoors. Observing nature, he found solace in it and it heavily informed his art, of which fashion became the most eloquent expression. In his designs, Gong plays heavily with texture and movement to evoke the facets of nature which he has named them after. Such as the exceptional lightness of “The Ocean”, or the abrasiveness of “The Jungle” which is made of wood chips. The collection is engineered with and around nature, of which the human form has become a central element
Gong is more than just a designer, his craft expands to photography, video and fine art, giving him creative control of his designs across mediums. For his SS19 campaign, he explored the most prodigious natural duality: night and day. The first campaign, “Inside Out” is shot indoors. Model Shupei Qin is a soft natural force against the stark backdrop. From delicate to extreme, “Midsummer Night” is raw and untamed. Shot at midnight in Central Park, model Freya Kargard is wild and free and Gong’s designs take on a new fervour in this open space. Whether in the confines of a room, or under the New York moon, his ode to nature comes to life elegantly.
Mark Gong’s unbridled creativity transcends fashion, which gives his designs that much more dimension. What his campaigns demonstrate is to realise your vision by all means. The young designer and polymath is looking forward to carrying out more tremendous projects. He will reveal his 2019 Autumn Winter collection, “Back to the West”, during New York Fashion week in February.
