Change and progression are the only constants of the modern age. For Spring/Summer 2016 MAX.TAN explores the struggle and desire to achieve a ‘perfect’ way of living in spite of our imperfection and the flaws of the human character which stay with us no matter how evolved we might be.

Even if unobtainable to fundamentally flawed beings, perfection is the ideal most people strive for and the impossibility of fully grasping it is perhaps what makes it so attractive. MAX.TAN gives us an interpretation of what it could be like to get out of the captivity of artificial rules and standards. For where there are no boundaries, there is greater room for growth.

As a liberation from standardised rules, MAX.TAN’s designs are light, built up from basic forms with a focus on the deconstruction and stripping-over of finished garments. With an alternative approach to design and a creative process that starts without having in mind a specific design, MAX.TAN’s offers us streamed lines, bold asymmetries and volumes which are in total sync with modernity. The ‘Thou Shalt Not’ collection is the concretisation of the ‘less is more’, where an empowering essence is exposed with larger-than-life proportions and minimality is fortitude.

Based in Singapore, Max graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Fashion Design in 2006. He showcased his collection in 2007 at Singapore Fashion Week and was awarded the second runner-up position at the Singapore Fashion Designers Contest. Following these successes, he established his eponymous label MAX.TAN.

Working on the fundamental elements of present living conditions and philosophies, MAX.TAN experiments with unconventional cuts and tailoring. The silhouettes are often built upon binaries: minimum and maximum, masculine and feminine, undersized and oversized, allowing a constant transformation of classical elements of design.
