Along Europe’s wild Atlantic edge, there is a shore where tides roll in heavy with a haze of mist and elemental character. Biarritz rises from it like a paradox: elegant but untamed, relaxed yet alive, timeless and ever-changing. It’s no accident that surfing found its European birthplace here on waves steeped in heritage and rebellion.

It’s the ultimate backdrop to Queen Classic Surf Festival, a movement striving to dissolve the binary. Three local surfers and friends, Amaya Gomis, Aimée and Margaux Arramon-Tucoo came together to build a stage where inclusion moves as freely as the waves, and to remind the surf world that fluidity, not conformity, is the sport’s truest essence. Supported by Vans Europe, Queen Classic Surf Festival is a safe space for women, queer voices and anyone sidelined by stereotypes. Taking place from 12 – 14 September, this year’s event was a mix of longboard excellence, cultural debate and liberated celebration, aiming to confront the surf community with conversations it needs the most.

Rainbow flags adorned the beach as trailblazing surf queens glided along the Côte des Basques. On land, Vans skaters uplifted each other up with unapologetic cool-girl energy. Then at night, the afterparty took over as DJs and drag queens dazzled. The festival prides itself on being a haven for understanding, visibility and diversity, opening up its waters to surfers from across the globe from Iran to Brazil and Australia. Juliette Lacome, a longtime Vans surfer and active “Queen,” reflected on the festival’s international reach. “We do have brands like Vans that support us doing events like Queens,” she told Schön! “It’s pretty cool to have people  from all around the world coming to Biarritz. It’s still a small surf town [so] to have these girls coming is pretty special.”

Queen Classic Surf Festival is breaking norms one wave at a time — and the goal isn’t only to let women shine — it’s to invite every gender,  origin and belief to celebrate one another doing what they love. Its bold and free spirit is a mirror of the Basque Pearl, Biarritz, that it calls home.
