connecting with art at salon meiselberg

Salon Meiselberg is a gem set within the illustrious Schloss Meiselberg, a historic private residence nestled in the heart of Carinthia, Austria. Transformed by artist Magda von Hanau into a singular art venue for temporary curated encounters, the castle becomes more than just a backdrop for past and present artistries encounters. Initiated in 2022, Salon Meiselberg serves as a vibrant stage for both established local talents and renowned international artists, opening its doors once a year to showcase their diverse creations to art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

“For me, Schloss Meiselberg isn’t simply a venue; it’s a living entity that influences how I perceive and connect with contemporary art. When choosing the artists, I find myself reflecting on the stories embedded in the castle’s walls, allowing them to guide my choices,” states von Hanau, reflecting on the theatrical essence of the space. She adds, “I approach the staging as a personal narrative, where each artwork becomes a character that interacts with the historical backdrop. […] It’s about creating a conversation – a dialogue that bridges the past with the present.”

Under the title “Into the Wild” and curated by Domenico de Chirico, this year’s show is attuned to the peaceful Carynthian landscape. In an age of rising technology, growing division, and the illusion of connection, a threshold through which we might return to the natural world and the unapologetic beauty that resides there is echoed by the artists invited: Markus Orsini-Rosenberg, Zhivago Duncan, Daniel Spivakov, WKND Lab, Antonio Bokel, Magda von Hanau, Melania Toma, Eva Schlegel, and Erwin Wurm. The works – varied yet complementary – fit perfectly within the rich morphology of the hosting castle.

They speak of liberation and survival, of streams of consciousness, of the vital thrust of life, of fleeing societal cages and returning to ancient roots. Each piece carries a tension: the human urge to control set against nature’s irrepressible pulse. Nature’s force – at once brutal and tender – emerges in a powerful visual lexicon that merges abstract and figurative forms, dark and vivid colours, varied materials and techniques, and rich textures. Here, we are called to deeply reflect on our relationship with the environment, devoid of any preconceptions of today’s media narratives.
