While NYC, Paris and Milan celebrate fashion designers, LA is the town for costume design. What we see on screens influences and inspires fashion and becomes part of our culture. This year, the CDG celebrated its 24th year of the Costume Designers Guild Awards — hosting and awarding the best costume designers in the industry. Many arrived on the red carpet with little Ukrainian flag pins, and Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez expressed that the CDG stands in support of Ukraine, its people and refugees.
The star-studded event had a career achievement award for Sharen Davis (King Richards), and a spotlight award for actor Andrew Garfield, who arrived dressed in Saint Laurent and was clearly touched by this honour. He had a fantastic year and is also nominated for an Oscar for playing the late Rent composer Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom. Presenters like Laura Dern, Judith Light or Storm Reid (Euphoria) announced winners, and hosts Andrew Rannells (The Prom) and Casey Wilson (The Shrink Next Door) added a comedic touch to the evening.
Sharon Long, who won an award for The Great, came from London and loved meeting all her talented colleagues. “We don’t have this in the UK, an award where you meet all the other costume designers,” she said. Other winners were Patricia Field for Emily in Paris, Jenny Beavan for Cruella, Ruth E. Carter for Coming 2 America and Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan for Dune — which makes us wonder who will win the Costume Design Academy Award this year.
Writer Katharina Baron met with B. Åkerlund the next day in her LA showroom, after she had won an award for Excellence in Short Form Design for her Swarovski commercial Welcome to Wonderlab. She is know for her difficult projects. “I like to create characters,” she said. “That is what I am known for. I never get hired for Gap commercials. It is always for something complicated and different. You are never as good as your last job. I constantly push myself.”
Åkerlund had filmed the Swarovski commercial in Kyiv at the end of 2022 with a talented Ukrainian team. In her acceptance speech, she sent prayers to Ukraine. “Ukraine is a very special place,” she said. She has also kept in touch with her crew. “They are all still there, the people that I know. They are seeing bombings all around them. It’s hard to imagine. I had a big Ukrainian crew and I also worked with another Ukrainian designer on another project that I did. It’s horrifying. We can’t imagine how it’s like, and we can all just hope for this madness to end because if it turns into World War III we might not be sitting here having this conversation. I think we should be, as human beings, above and beyond war. Especially coming out of the pandemic, people now have to fear for their lives. It is so wrong in so many ways.”
