Anna Diop OMEGA Schön! 45 Titans series to an African immigrant in Nanny , the first horror film to win the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. These roles aren’t that far from Diop’s reality, as she immigrated to America from Senegal at six years old. Heritage is something that ripples through Diop’s life — from the roles she plays to the clothes she wears. “I’ve spent my life adapting to different environments,” Diop explains. “I’m good at doing that in my personal life because I belong to many different worlds. My culture is one world. The industry I work in is another.”
Although when Diop speaks with Schön! a few months ago she was unable to speak directly about projects due to the strike, she still was musing on the impact her work has had on her life and vice versa. “I used to wear this princess necklace that my dad got for me when I was ten,” she says. “I was thinking about it the other day because that necklace defined my personality then and my personality still, to be honest. I ended up playing this character for five years, who’s a literal princess from a different planet. She comes to Earth and has to adapt to the ways of humans. She’s faced with trials and tribulations and guilt from leaving her planet. I was thinking about how life sometimes imitates art and vice versa. The story of this character is the story of me. I left Senegal at a young age. I’ve lived much of my life with this survivor’s guilt thinking of family that’s left there, and cousins that don’t have the same opportunities as me. I came to the States and had to assimilate to this place I knew nothing about. I still often feel quite alien. I was meditating on what that necklace meant and the way that my life was and is so parallel to this character.”
