With the release of two major projects, 2023 is shaping up to be Justice Smith ‘s year. Dressed in Calvin Klein for his Schön! 44 cover, Smith chats about what he has mastered: the art of summoning his playful spirit. Entering the realm of fantasy in Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves , Smith believes it’s the human desire to connect with our inner sense of play that has made the game such a cult classic. If that wasn’t enough, he taps further into his imagination in the Apple TV+ suspense-thriller Sharper , a performance where Smith masterfully plays with the duplicitous nature of his character.
Sharper also gave Smith the freedom to take an alternative approach where he could prioritise presence over preparation. He considers, “I didn’t learn my lines until I got onto set so I didn’t have any preconceived notions about how I was going to say them. It allowed me to just respond to my fellow actors, so I could really experience the circumstance for the first time… That was the best way for me to approach Sharper because I had to shoot so many scenes where the character believed something other than what they were saying.”
Like with Sharper , Smith approached the hotly anticipated Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with a similar mindset. “What’s beautiful about this movie is that it shines a light on so many communities who haven’t, as adults, forgotten their inner child and sense of play,” he explains. “It’s just a bunch of people getting together and creating a story together… So many people would benefit from that.”
