When Oakley’s half-century of sports innovation collides with Meta’s obsession with AI, the result feels straight out of ‘Black Mirror’ – only without the dystopia. The American eyewear brand has always had a taste for the future, experimenting in the past with iridescent lenses, alien silhouettes, and eyewear that looked beamed in from another galaxy. Now, with Meta at its side, Oakley is upping the ante with Meta Vanguard, a line of AI-powered performance glasses that lands somewhere between sports gear and sci-fi. It’s AI in the sense of ‘Athletic Intelligence,’ merging the athlete and the cyborg, pushing human potential into uncharted territory.
“Oakley invented the sports performance category, now with Oakley Meta Vanguard we’re setting another new baseline for what is possible,” says Caio Amato, Oakley Global President. “We wanted to redefine what eyewear could be by delivering Performance AI glasses, technological advancements that truly amplify human potential. And it’s a leap toward a new era of human possibilities.”
Launched at Meta Connect, the Vanguard is designed for athletes who live on the edge of endurance. Real-time training data syncs with Strava and Garmin. A POV camera captures rides, runs, and descents in crisp 3K, complete with slow motion and hyperlapse. Open-ear audio and a five-mic array cut through city noise or mountain wind. And with nine hours of charge (plus a case that adds 36 more), the glasses are made to last as long as you do.
Style, naturally, hasn’t been left behind. Four frame-and-lens combos keep things fresh – Matte Black with PRIZM™ 24K for golden-hour bravado, Matte White with PRIZM™ Black for minimalists, plus Road and Sapphire options that echo Oakley’s cycling and snow heritage. Lenses swap out easily, turning performance eyewear into a modular playground.
“Our products have demonstrated that when iconic design meets breakthrough AI technology, most recently with the Oakley Meta HSTN leading our sports category, the result is wearable tech that the world will embrace, transforming how we view the future of eyewear,” says Rocco Basilico, Chief Wearables Officer for EssilorLuxottica. “With Meta, our offerings will anchor a category that spans functions, technologies, brands, and communities worldwide. We’re looking at a long runway ahead of us.”
Cyclist Mark Cavendish stars in the global campaign, along with other star-athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Mark Mcmorris, Cassandre Beaugrand, Jr Smith, and Kylian Mbappé. But really, these glasses are designed for anyone who wants to train harder, play faster, or relive a ski descent without fumbling for a phone. Oakley Meta Vanguard will roll out globally this autumn, with the US, UK, Europe, Canada, and Australia first in line. Mexico, India, Brazil, and the UAE are on deck later this year.
So yes, the ‘athletic intelligence’ era of sport is officially here, and Oakley wants you in on it.
