Illusion is the enigmatic title of Tingwei Yang’s graduate collection; crane your neck in anticipation as we expect her star to rise… high. A period of study at the prestigious ESMOD International Fashion Institute in Paris later and Yang wholly believes she will one day have her very own eponymous fashion line. If Illusion is anything to go by, this confidence is far from unfounded.
The real sense of geometry and structural appreciation is tangible in this collection, most notably inspired by the gothic beauty of the Sagrada Familia, the world renowned Gaudi designed Cathedral in Barcelona. The grandiose qualities of the Sagrada Familia are more heavily referenced in certain pieces, most distinctly in an exquisite coat emblazoned with a fully integrated three dimensional visage that looks almost as if it too were set in stone.
Even the seemingly simpler pieces demonstrate an astonishing eye for detail and knowledge of fabric. The rest of the collection comprises of beautiful gliding satin and fur textures mimicking natural forms and structures, with a focus on elongated silhouettes. The culmination of these practices lead to a truly Art Nouveau collection which is strikingly beautiful and surprisingly ready to wear.

It is the belief of Tingwei Yang that a designer’s work can reflect his or her own character or conditions; if that be the case we can surmise that Yang is deeply and darkly creative, inspired by the magnificently mysterious and that she has a serious penchant for facial form in clothing.
Shot by Wenyi Liu, a graduate of the similarly prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China, this editorial, captured in dappled blue tones, gives an air of mystery and augmented reality almost as if underwater or deep in a forest cavern, as Kristel models Yang’s shell-textured dresses and Moai imprinted pieces.
