hoka x j.l-a-l | the mafate x

For their second collaboration, HOKA, the California-born performance powerhouse under Deckers Brands, reunites with experimental fashion label J.L-A.L to reimagine the Mafate X, a trail-running icon, through a high-fashion lens. At first glance, it’s pure utility: aggressive tread, lightweight structure, engineered endurance. But Jean-Luc Ambridge Lavelle, the mind behind J.L-A-L, treats the silhouette like a blank canvas, swapping rugged pragmatism for abstract beauty.

The design team’s inspirations feel refreshingly specific, almost esoteric. An iridescent piece of sushi sparked this idea for a shimmer-like finish that catches the light with a strange, petrol-slick gleam. Mud, rock, and terrain become aesthetic cues rather than obstacles.

“Reconnecting with the J.L-A-L team on a second collaboration is truly a dream come true for our team,” says Thomas Cykana, HOKA’s Senior Director of Global Collaborations. “Their attention to detail, deep appreciation for technical design, and ability to reframe performance gear through an absurdly abstract yet infinitely tasteful lens makes them an ideal partner, especially for a silhouette like the Mafate X.”

The collab taps into a bigger shift: trail running is no longer just for ultra-marathoners and weekend hikers, becoming fashion’s latest obsession. And while other brands flirt with “outdoor aesthetics,” this pairing brings authenticity to the trend, keeping the Mafate X’s technical DNA intact while elevating it into cult territory.

“It’s exciting to work on a model that is so core to HOKA’s DNA,” Lavelle says. “What excites me most is that this project holds value beyond trend cycles. It feels like a true step forward in redefining what high-performance footwear can look like.”

The Mafate X is available now in two colourways online and at select global retailers. Discover more here.
