Stepping fully into the subject of the African diaspora, ten toes down with an open mind and open heart, Raphaëlle Red embraces everything from the feeling of not belonging, to the Afro-European and African American experiences and understanding the necessary differences and similarities. Red goes deeper still, untangling the world in her debut novel ‘Adikou’, a coming-of-age story that touches on discovering Afrodiasporic heritage and the emotions surrounding that: of carrying a history that you feel disconnected from while feeling the scars generations later.

It’s a journey of self-discovery. “I was really trying to make space for the messiness of it, the cobbling together of histories,” she says, wearing CHANEL for her Schön! 49 story. “Self-exploration is not a linear, solitary pursuit. With self-exploration, there’s this idea that the thing is already there, especially when it comes to diaspora narratives. You just have to go find the thing. [What] I’m interested in is, ‘What did you decide to build? Where did desire lead you? Where did grief lead you?’”
