There are collaborations that particularly excite us, and usually it’s when there’s an intersection between fashion and music involved. When Louis Vuitton announced that Men’s Creative Director Pharrell Williams was bringing to life a capsule collection with Tyler, the Creator, our editorial team immediately marked the date in their diaries to discover the pieces.
Expanding on Pharrell’s vision for the house, the collection is as cool as one would expect from the collision of these music heavyweights. Tyler, the Creator had already worked with Louis Vuitton, providing the soundtrack for the Autumn/Winter 2022 Men’s show – thus, moving forward with this collaborative force made perfect design sense.
Speaking of the collaboration, Pharrell Williams explained that the fusion of creative visions and crossovers between genres was key to his vision for Louis Vuitton: “Tyler has been my close friend and collaborator for years, and we’ve always connected on music and design,” he explained. “This collaboration is unique to Louis Vuitton because it’s a natural extension of our LVERS philosophy, building on our network of incredible artists and creatives. There are so many elements specific to Tyler built into these pieces, and it’s been inspiring to see him hone in on his craft and collaborate with him for this Spring collection.”
The aesthetic world of Tyler, the Creator, with his highly distinctive iconographic vocabulary and signature preppy look, is reinvented in true Louis Vuitton form with the hand-drawn “Craggy Monogram”. Among the floral motifs introducing elements of Spring, hidden daisies and Airedale Terriers appear as a reference to the visual universe of Tyler, the Creator. “My main focus was making things I would wear all the time,” he explained, introducing the vision for his designs. “I dress the same for a meeting as I do for a performance or a grocery store trip, so hand-drawing the monogram felt like the perfect balance to me. The chessboard is one of the greatest things I’ve made and is definitely my favourite thing from the collection.”
Key pieces of the capsule include a chocolate down jacket, a windbreaker, a denim matching set of trousers and jacket, dungarees, a custard-coloured raincoat, and a leather varsity jacket with a logo rendered as a floral bloom. A grass-like green fleece with the house’s Craggy Monogram is a particular favourite. Tyler, the Creator’s original Damier pattern transforms iconic bags of Louis Vuitton, with motifs adorning leather charms, a Sac Golf, and a mini cross-body golf bag. Five new bag shapes are also included in this reworked aesthetic, with an envelope messenger, an Envelope WW, and an Envelope Pouch all reinvented by the rapper-producer-artist, as well as a Rush Bumbag and a dog-shaped strap bag. Fans of music and fashion alike will be enthralled by this capsule collection. Here’s hoping for more collaborations in the future.
