Inspired by the 1960s “angura” in Japan, which is the abbreviation of the Japanese phrase “underground theatre,” this Schön! editorial explores the avant-garde little theatre movement that brought together Brechtian modernism and formalist realism of postwar Shingeki theatre across Japan. These productions would take place anywhere & everywhere — from tents to street corners to small, intimate spaces — and explored themes of primitivism, sexuality, and embodied physicality.
