Nobody shines quite as bright as Becky G . Fresh from her first-ever headline tour, the Latin superstar shimmers in Pandora for her Schön! 45 digital cover story, sharing how her new album proudly pays homage to her Chicana heritage. Moving with intention, her power truly lies in her voice — whether that’s through her platinum-selling music, supporting foundations for causes like Justice for Migrant Women, or spearheading a production company that prides itself on placing an emphasis on telling Latin stories through Latin voices.
The 26-year-old may be a mainstream superstar with hundreds of millions of streams under her belt, but in the beginning, breaking into the Latin market as an American artist was challenging. “When I wanted to sing in different languages there really [was] no blueprint for the reverse crossover other than Selena Quintanilla,” she recalls. “Growing up in communities like mine, there are a lot of cards stacked against us, but that’s like a superpower. We have the ability to make something from nothing.”
Identity became the subject matter of her new album Esquinas , which translates to ‘corners’ in English. It’s an ode to existing between cultural crossroads, she explains. “I’ve always felt like I had to be one or the other, Mexican or American. My cousins from Mexico would tell me that I’m American but in America, I would be told that I’m Mexican, and I never felt enough of either.” The album is a pure embodiment of what it means to be a 200 percenter, a title that describes identifying with more than one culture and finding a way to fully embrace both.
