Down a tiny alleyway with pink plaster walls, much like many in the Medina, you will find an emerald green door and a small mosaic sign that reads IZZA, hinting at the understated luxury that awaits inside. The hotel, which opened in 2023, is an amalgamation of former riads and encompasses the wonderful rooftop restaurant Noujoum, three tranquil courtyards (one with a petite, but lovely pool), a spa and even a boutique.
The 14 highly individual rooms and suites are each a tribute to icons of Marrakech’s 1960s and 70s counterculture, such as Jack Kerouac or Allen Ginsberg, but the overriding inspiration for the aesthetic was drawn from the late Bill Willis, an American expat who became one of the city’s most prolific interior designers. Willis’s legacy and his reputation as a bon vivant can best be experienced in the diminutive but decadent Bill’s Bar.
It’s no wonder that IZZA, with its lovingly curated interiors, recently received its first Michelin Key. Beyond hospitality, the establishment boasts an unrivalled collection of over 300 artworks – many of them digital, including AI and NFTs – and an unparalleled commitment to supporting artisans and emerging artists. As Creative Director – as well as Interior Stylist – Aicha Benazzouz is a woman who wears many hats at IZZA.
Having always felt that she had a “creative soul”, Benazzouz quit a career in banking insurance to train at an interior design firm, where she was tasked with sourcing fabrics for the new hotel. Her involvement in the design process grew until she was offered a full-time job at IZZA. Since then, her role has continued to evolve with IZZA’s events and its Associate Artists Programme.
We speak to Benazzouz about why the hotel calls itself ‘The Museum in the Medina’ and ‘Marrakech’s House of Friends’.
