Emily Rudd is constantly moving — not only physically, after completing a whirlwind international press tour, but also creatively and emotionally, as she continues to find her footing. At the heart of it all is ‘One Piece’, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga, brought to life in a way that feels immersive, expansive, and deeply emotional. For Rudd, who opens up about her portrayal of Nami for her Schön! 50 digital cover story, the experience has been both surreal and grounding. “It has the same feeling as at Christmas,” she says about the show’s release. “There’s the lead-up, then it happens… and you’re like, ‘Oh’. There’s a bit of a comedown.”

While the story centres around a legendary treasure hunt, it is far from a conventional pirate tale. “My experience with pirates was ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ or ‘Muppet Treasure Island’,” Rudd laughs. But in this world, piracy takes on a different meaning because, “You realise that the ocean is something nobody can or should claim as their own. The adventurous spirit and sense of freedom: that’s the heart of our show.”

This Schön! editorial is a photo story that explores the tension between the socially constructed self and the emotions concealed beneath it. Using portraiture as its central form, the series moves beyond conventional representation, presenting each model as both an outward performance and an inward condition. Through the pairing of full-body and close-up portraits, unchanged facial expressions become markers of consistency and restraint, while subtle gestures and atmosphere reveal suppressed emotions beneath the surface. Minimal visual intervention and controlled composition create a quiet yet emotionally charged space where identity appears both stable and fragmented. Rather than documenting individual character, PERSONA reflects on how social expectations shape self-presentation, inviting a reconsideration of authenticity, concealment, and the boundaries between public and private identity.
