Fashions fade, style is eternal. — Yves Saint Laurent

For Issue 36 of Schön!, we look back in order to move forward.

We dust away outdated trends and opt for a full-on renaissance, because style is indeed eternal.

With revival and reinvention as our main conductors, we look at the transience of culture, fashion and art. We fill our pages with disruptors, trendsetters, performers and creators that advance our culture, albeit with their gaze turned to the past.

We start with our cover star H.E.R., shot by Oriana Layendecker, whose interpretation of R&B goes back to the genre’s roots. Staying in the music realm, we catch up with the unapologetic Azealia Banksas she lets us into her boudoir, and London girlLava La Rueschools us on how to turn nostalgia into creative fuel. Ballet’s bad boy Sergei Polunintakes us on a ride through California as he discusses what freedom means to him.

On screen, we celebrate new talents like Kathryn Newton, who will be gracing both the small and big screens in the highly anticipated Big Little Liesand Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boyntongoes noir in Netflix’s black comedy The Politician, Jack Dylan Grazer talks reviving ‘60s comics in Shazam!, Stephanie Beatrizreveals how she breaks boundaries in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Tati Gabrielleand Chance Perdomodish on their wicked characters and their future (joint) mischiefs. Last but not least, Sofia Carsonspills some secrets on the hotly anticipated Pretty Little Liars’s spin-off The Perfectionists.

Certainly, retro finds its best counterpart in fashion. In these pages, photographer Nadia Lee Cohencaptures British designer and “partner in crime” Zizi Donohoeserving up old Hollywood glamour, and we sit down with menswear designer Umit Benan, whose collection counts Malcolm X and Tupac as influences.

In our editorials, model-turned-voyager Sara Robaszkiewicznavigates deserted lands, Mona Matsuokaembodies timeless elegance, we explore monochromatic glamour with Bing Bing Liu, Nina Granicbecomes our retro beauty muse, and our New York Models gang, led by Julia Belyakova, colour up our world.

Everything, like fashion, is cyclical in nature. The past shapes the present and the present shapes the past. For Schön!36, we remember and dream with a generous dose of retro-infused nostalgia.

Issue 36, and the mavens that have been part of it, signal a new chapter for Schön! as we turn green, moving distribution exclusively to Amazon
